ODNR Officers Investigating Unauthorized Event That Trashed Headlands

Officers said more than 1,000 people gathered Sunday night for an event that required extra cleanup and could lead to charges against organizers.

Headlands Beach State Park closed early Sunday and opened later than normal Monday due to extra cleanup needs following an event that was not approved by the park.

According to a statement from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement, the event grew to more than 1,000 people, which forced officers to close the beach early.

"Park staff spent Sunday evening and the first part of Monday morning cleaning up a large amount trash and litter left behind on the beach," the statement reads.

Mentor Police Lt. Tim Allen said the department sent a few officers to respond, but he nor ODNR indicated that any arrests were made. Still, the ODNR says it might file charges against organizers and that an investigation is ongoing.

"ODNR reminds the public that a special event permit is required for any event where the crowd will be larger than a family," the statement reads. "Permits are available at local park offices and are for the safety and security of the group and other park guests."
