Mentor Restaurants & Shops With Most Violations in May: Inspection Reports

May's reports show that more violations don't always equate to the worst reports.

The list of Mentor food service providers who had three or more violations during May inspections is short, and officials say that should be no surprise.

Lake County Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus always maintained that area restaurants, stores and others in the food industry generally do a good job in keeping things clean. Still, that doesn't mean that the providers who had multiple violations in May are part of an exclusive, dirty group. Last month's reports show instances where businesses had one violation that could be considered more damaging than the three that another received.

For example, Frozen Oasis had just one violation in May, but it involved whipped cream kept at temperatures higher than the Lake County General Health District demands to prevent bacterial growth. When an inspector returned for a follow-up visit one week later, the cream was even warmer. The issue was corrected on the second follow-up visit.

Another restaurant, Fuji Japan Steakhouse received the kind of complaint that even Crusin' 50's Diner didn't have to worry about, despite having 11 violations of its own.

A family of three filed a complaint stating that each person became ill with nausea, cramping and diarrhea two or three hours after eating at Fuji. Shared items included tuna, salmon, sushi, Unagi Don, sashimi, miso soup and seaweed salad.

Fruit flies were found in the kitchen and the handsink in the kitchen was not stocked with soap or paper towels.

View the Google Fusion table above for a small sample of the reports. In classifications like 'C3S,' the 'C' indicates a commercial entity, while the number in the classifications is a ranking that considers the size of a facility and the potential risk in food distribution.
