Food Inspections: Who Had Fewest Violations in July?

Bob Evans, Papa John's and Laguna Station are among the food service providers who received favorable inspections.

The season for inspecting schools, daycare facilities and the like is winding down, with more restaurants receiving inspections as the fall approaches.

"We'll really get into the meat of things by October," Lake County General Health District Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus said.

Several restaurants were found to be pretty clean in July, even those that received complaints from the public around the time of their standard inspections. One woman complained that she and a couple other people in her party became ill after eating wings at Quaker Steak & Lube last month.

Inspector Elizabeth Rinnder's complaint inspection showed no violations regarding the wings or their temperatures. No employees were ill and no other customers issued complaints.

A similar incident was reported at Red Lobster, though that complainant went to the hospital for a confirmed case of salmonella. While Rinnder's follow-up did find some food to be below required temperatures, shrimp—which the woman believes made her sick—was not one of them. No other customers complained and no employees were sick.

Additionally, a manager wrote a letter to the district detailing preventive measures the staff would take to prevent the temperature violations.

(Editor's note: Red Lobster's food temperature violations aren't included the table above, which was reserved for the standard inspection, not the complaint response.)

The above Google Fusion table also includes several providers that had zero violations. The food service providers each carry a category with a numerical ranking that is indicative of the risk the state believes there is for a patron to become ill. Restaurants are often listed as "C2S" or "C3S" and schools, "N2S" or "N4S," based on size and risk.
