Planting Begins At Mentor's Community Garden

The people behind the community garden at Wildwood Cultural Center "broke soil" Wednesday morning

The three organizations behind Mentor's community garden -- the city of Mentor, Lake County General Health District and Kaiser Permanente -- gathered Wednesday morning at Wildwood Cultural Center to open their joint project. They planted a trio of tomato plants to officially open the city's first community garden. The garden was the idea of Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak. However, it took a grant from Kaiser Permanente, for which LCGHD Health Educator Tori Sinclair wrote the application, to make it happen. Kaiser Permanente pediatrician Dr. Andrea Zets said the garden symbolized what Kaiser stood for -- staying health through prevention and proactiveness. Garden Club Sale Returns to Wildwood This Saturday

Gardeners can browse from a large selection of vegetables, perennials, flowers and gardening supplies

The Wildwood Garden Club will hold its 27th annual Spring Plant & Flower Sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Wildwood Cultural Center in Mentor. The event will be held rain or shine. A large selection of vegetable plants, perennials, flowers and gardening supplies will be available. All proceeds will benefit the Wildwood Garden Club. The garden club is one of several cultural arts clubs housed at Wildwood Cultural Center. It plans, plants and maintains the gardens around the Wildwood Manor House. Wildwood Cultural Center Offering Free Self-Defense, Security Classes

The classes cover everything from Internet safety to personal self-defense

The Wildwood Cultural Center is presenting a series of public service meetings on family and personal security and safety. These sessions are free and open to the public. They will be led by police officers from local departments, as well as other safety professionals. All sessions will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on listed Tuesdays in the South Wing at Wildwood Cultural Center. While both adults and children are welcome to attend these sessions. children must be accompanied by a parent. Winter Weave Returns to Wildwood Cultural Center

Basket weavers from as far away as Alaska and California travel to Mentor to learn new weaving techniques from the experts

About 50 basket weavers – some from as far away as the Pacific coast –  have gathered this weekend at Wildwood Cultural Center for the annual Winter Weave. Professional and amateur weavers alike converge to learn new techniques and practice their art. Many of the weavers who came to Winter Weave this year make it an annual pilgrimage, so this is a great chance for them to catch up with old friends, as well. Char Ciammaichella of the Wildwood Basketry Guild organizes the event. From 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, people can come to the cultural center and observe the weavers to see if they might enjoy it, as well. Those interested in weaving can join the guild. Mentor To Have Community Garden At Wildwood Cultural Center

People can reserve one of the few remaining plots by calling the city

The city of Mentor has received a grant for its community garden at Wildwood Cultural Center. The $14,750 grant comes from Kaiser Permanente via the Lake Country General Health District. The city will use the money to install a water line, hoses, a sign and fencing to keep out deer, according to a story in The News-Herald. A community garden is a single piece of land that's gardened collectively by a group -- in this case, the residents of Mentor. The Mentor garden will have 32 plots, each of which are 20 by 25 feet. Those who are interested in taking responsibility for one of the plots next year can call Paul Hegreness of the city's Parks and Recreation Department at 440-974-5123. Wildwood Theatre capped its three-week camp with a performance of Barry Boffo & The Curiously Long Magical Tale Thursday evening at Mentor High School. The Harry Potter parody was filled with rapping owls, silly string assaults, and more "gits" and "prats" than you can shake a wand at. The play was written by camp director Steve Couch with music from Joseph Hollings, but it was the kids who made the show memorable.
