Jacqueline Hoynes says while she is satisfied with the district's performance, there is a danger in overemphasizing standardized test scores
Jacqueline Hoynes, the superintendent of Mentor Schools, is satisfied with the district's grade from the Ohio Department of Education. The district was ranked excellent for the sixth consecutive year. "I was pleased with the results," she said. "We met adequate yearly progress in every category. Our performance index score went up. Every category we met and exceeded." She attributed the district's continued success to what she calls "the culture of a professional learning community." Every week her teachers meet by either grade or discipline to compare teaching strategies, she said. They make suggestions to each other based on how well students learn certain topics in each class. Check out the individual report cards for each school in the Mentor district
Not only did the Ohio Department of Education grade Mentor Schools, it also graded each individual school in the district. Twelve of the 13 schools in the district received the grade "excellent." Only Lake Elementary received a lower grade. ODE designated it as "effective," the same grade it has received the last two years. All but two Mentor schools met all of their state indicators. Garfield Elementary met seven of eight indicators and Lake met five of eight. Lake Elementary scored 96.7 out of 120 possible points on ODE's performance index. The Ohio Department of Education released report card information for Mentor Schools
The Ohio Department of Education released Mentor Schools' report card this morning; and the district did not just pass its tests, it aced most of them. For the sixth consecutive year, the district was ranked excellent. Moreover, its performance index score bumped from 102.4 last year to 103.8 now. The maximum possible performance score is 120. "We've raised our performance score every year for the last four years," Mentor Schools Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes said during the Board of Education meeting Tuesday. With my sons graduating as the 4th generation of our family in 1994 (I graduated in 1975, my mother in 1956 and my grandmother in 1929) I am proud that Mentor remains an excellant school system and hope they continue through my grandchildren's years at Mentor!   more ›
