- OPINION

Thursday, February 7
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: Name one special thing you love about each of your children. Donna Milnes: I love the wonderful caring adults and mothers my daughters have become. Melanie Majikas: I love that my older daughter has tremendous drive and determination to succeed. She is very self-motivated and always has been. I love that my younger daughter immerses herself in artistic pursuits (dance, drama) and is very emotionally in tune with the world around her. And I love that they are both turning into great young women that I am proud of. Kimberly Jones: I just love coming home from work and having my daughters there…

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: What person (or people) had the biggest influence on your parenting style and what did you learn from them? Gloria Kilfoyle: My parents did. They had a wonderful marriage. They raised my brother and me with a soft, loving hand, but we knew that when we were asked to do something, we did it. They were always respectful to us and we to them. I had a wonderful childhood and I tried to bring that to my four children. Now I am trying to do that for my grandchildren.

Cleaning dishes? Folding laundry? Dusting? What chore would you rather live without?
- OPINION

Thursday, January 24
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: What is your most hated household chore? What is the one you would much rather enlist the children/husband/anyone else to do? Donna Milnes: My least favorite chore is dusting. Not because it is hard but because it is so redundant. Dust in the morning and it is back by lunch. I would much rather do chores that show a completion like folding clothes, painting walls, cutting grass, etc. Renee Ochaya: Hands down -- my least favorite chore is cleaning the bathrooms. Fortunately, the blue toilet bowl cleaner has always been interesting to my kids and they actually like to clean the bathroom. …

Why do people expect moms to be perfect and whom do you turn to when you're overwhelmed?
- OPINION
-
Friday, January 18
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: So I was reading this and it made me wonder. Why do we expect from so much from moms? Where did this myth of the perfect mom come from and why do we hold everyone to that standard? And why do we heap mommy guilt onto good moms who just might have a bad day? So, my question to you is, how often do you feel overwhelmed? And do you feel as if there is anyone who you can discuss this feeling with honestly? Donna Milnes: I think most moms feel overwhelmed and guilty at not being that “perfect mom.” I think moms in general are way to hard on themselves about not having a cooked meal at home, not …

What can you do to stop the flu from running rampant through your home?
- OPINION
-
Friday, January 11
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: It's beginning to look a lot like flu season. Lake Health is limiting the number of visitors at its medical centers. Lake County Health District is reminding us they still have flu shots available. What -- if anything -- can be done to prevent the flu from running rampant through homes with children? Or is it just a matter of time once one of your kids (or grandkids) have it? Donna Milnes: I am a huge believer of getting the flu shot every year. If there is something that can keep me from getting the flu, or making it less severe, I’m all for it. The other thing that I practice with my kids …

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: What will your remember most about 2012? It could be something personal, a global event or anywhere in between? Devone Lansing: I'm sure everyone will always remember the shootings that happened last month. I felt a very personal connection with those kids and their families, and I will never forget the day that it happened. Gloria Kilfoyle: I will always remember the school shootings in Chardon and in Connecticut. I pray that these types of tragedies against our children will never happen again.

Do you have any specific plans to better yourself in the New Year?
- OPINION
-
Friday, December 28, 2012
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. Are you or your children making any New Year's resolutions? If so, what are they? Melanie Majikas: I usually try to make two New Year's Resolutions, one for action and one for learning. For action, in 2013, I am going to start training to run 5Ks with my daughter and sister. Haven't decided yet on the learning one -- will either learn how to knit, or maybe refresh my knowledge of French with some renewed study of the language.

There have been several high-profile shootings this year. Have they made you feel like your family is less safe?

Thursday, December 20, 2012
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. After Chardon, I asked you "Do you worry about your kids' and grandkids' safety at school?" Instead of asking you the same question again, I want to broaden the scope. This year, we have seen mass shootings at a high school, an elementary school, a Sikh temple and a movie theater. Do these instances of mass murder make you feel less safe as a parent or grandparent? Have these incidences changed how your approach your child or grandchild's safety? Melanie Majikas: I am not a fearful parent. I know that children are far more likely to be harmed by people who know them than by random strangers. But these incidents do…

Thursday, December 13, 2012
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question is a continuation of last week's theme -- favorite holiday TV specials. However, this time, I'm asking for your favorite Christmas songs. (I'm a sucker for "Sleigh Ride" and "Ain't No Chimneys In The Projects.") Renee Ochaya: I enjoy all the festive holiday songs, but my all-time favorite song to remind of the meaning of the season is "Silent Night." Donna Milnes: I love all of the traditional Holiday songs but “Go Tell It on the Mountain” is a favorite of mine because it tells the story of Christ being born and has an easy melody so that everyone can sing along. Of course, we love to sing “…

What movies and specials do you and your family watch each year?

Thursday, December 6, 2012
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week our question is: It's the holiday season. Hanukkah begins this Friday; Christmas is three weeks away; Kwanzaa starts the 26th (or, at least, so says Google.) It may sound trite but one of my favorite parts of the season is breaking out holiday TV specials. My wife is a sucker for the 12 Days of Christmas. I'm a Muppet Family Christmas kind of guy. What holiday specials do your families love? Peanuts? For Better or for Worse? Justice League? Donna Milnes: Our family always watches the children's classics: Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch and last year we added the Elf on the Shelf (which my grandchildren have at …
