The scholarships are designed to help at-risk high school students
For the 12th year, Simon Youth Foundation will award a college scholarship to one student from every community that is home to a Simon property. Simon Youth Foundation is a nonprofit spinoff of Simon Property Group, which owns Great Lakes Mall. It provides educational opportunities for at-risk high school students The scholarships can be applied for until Friday, January 11, 2013. Locally, students can pick up a copy of a scholarship application at the Simon Guest Services Center at Great Lakes Mall. Applications also can be downloaded at the SYF website here or here. Any student who will be graduating in the class of 2013 and lives within 50 miles of a Simon property is eligible. The program will award a one-time scholarship of up to $1…

United Way of Lake County is still looking for volunteers to help with gift wrapping at the Great Lakes Mall this holiday season. This is a great way to spend some time helping those in need for the holidays. Proceeds from the gift-wrapping go to the 74 partner programs in Lake County that benefit people from all walks of life. The shifts are filling fast so please email with a requested time and day and a back-up time and day. One can email mslavick@uwlc.org or call 440-639-4583 to reserve a shift. The event is dedicated to families who have children with special needs
Great Lakes Mall will host a special Caring Santa session from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. this Sunday. Caring Santa is a special event dedicated to families that have children with special needs. It provides a subdued and stress-free environment to visit with Santa. Many steps are taken to reduce sensory triggers, creating a more comforting environment for the children’s visit with the jolly one. Santa's set is located in the Dillard's south concourse. Santa's regular hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (with hour-long reindeer breaks at 1 and 5 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays (reindeer break at 2.) Santa Claus has made his annual return to the Great Lakes Mall and both kids and (on some special days) and pets can get their photos taken with the jolly one. Children can be photographed with Santa at his set located in the Dillard’s south concourse from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (with hour-long reindeer breaks at 1 and 5 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays (reindeer break at 2.) The first 100 shoppers will get free clothes and other giveaways
The Great Lakes Mall location for Swedish retail clothing company H&M will open its doors to the public at noon today at the Mentor mall. The first 100 shoppers in line will receive an H&M T-shirt and an Access to Fashion Pass, valued from $10 to $300 as well as other giveaways. The store offers clothing based on the most recent fashion trends for men, women and children. H&M will occupy 17,000 square feet in the mall. This latest retailer is just one of the mall's new tenants in the wake of its multimillion-dollar renovation. Great Lakes Mall also recently welcomed locally owned restaurant Chop It Salad Co. and specialty retailer Teavana.

Twelve to 15 jobs will be available at the fast-fashion store
H&M, the Swedish fast-fashion boutique, will open its Great Lakes Mall store on July 26. The store offers clothing based on the most recent fashion trends for men, women and children. But, before it opens, the shop will have a hiring fair from noon to nine p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday this week. H&M is looking for 12 to 15 sales advisers to work in the 17,000-square foot store at the mall. Available positions are listed on www.hm.com in advance. H&M will be located across from JC Penney in the main concourse of the mall. The art show begins with a reception tonight and continues through Thursday
Great Lakes Mall will, once again, double as a gallery for more than 500 pieces of art created by elementary students from the Mentor Schools district. The Mentor Elementary Art Show is a three-day celebration, showcasing the best student drawings, paintings, collages, prints, sculptures and even photos from all 10 of the district's elementary schools. The show begins today with an opening night reception at 6 p.m. and continues through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the main concourse across from Kay's Jewelers. The free family entertainment event returns with music, giveaways and fun
The 14th annual KidShow returns with some old favorites and new twists this Saturday and Sunday at Great Lakes Mall. The family entertainment event is free and will include music, magic, crafts, cookies, clowns, karate demonstrations, dancing and baton performances. (Check out some of the photos from last year's KidShow.) Great Lakes Mall and the Cleveland Clinic have teamed for a new mall walking program. The program's goal is to add to a group of about 300 walkers already exercising at the mall weekly. A launch party will be held 8:30 a.m. Friday for those wishing to register for the program. Those who register at the Great Lakes Mall guest service booth in the Macy's concourse will receive a free drawstring backpack, as well as a complimentary breakfast and coffee. The mall will add new mile-marker signs throughout the concourses to help walkers track their distance and healthy walking tips to reinforce fitness goals. People started shopping at the stroke of midnight at Great Lakes Mall
Thousands of shoppers got the earliest possible start at midnight on Black Friday in Great Lakes Mall. One of those Mindi Kikel, who said she had never gone shopping on Black Friday before. "I just like the commotion because there's so many people. It's exciting," she said, standing outside of the Toys 'R Us store with a friend. Jennifer Praniewicz came to the mall with eight of her family members. "It's just for fun and adventure," she said. "We were all together for Thanksgiving, so we thought, 'Hey, let's go at midnight.
