Former State Rep. Mark Schneider pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge Friday afternoon in Mentor Municipal Court. "Your honor, I made a mistake. I'm here to accept responsibility for my actions," Schneider told Judge John Trebets. "I apologize to the court I apologize to the community for being here under these circumstances. I've spent my career fighting for others. I'd like to put this behind me so I can continue fighting for others." Trebets accepted Schneider's plea and found him guilty. This is Schneider's only drunk driving conviction. Trebets sentenced Schneider to five days in jail, which would start July 12. The final pretrial has been scheduled for former State Rep. Mark Schneider in Mentor Municipal Court. Schneider, who lives in Mentor, is accused of driving drunk. He previously pleaded not guilty to charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and changing lanes illegally. Schneider came to the Mentor courthouse with an attorney for a scheduled pretrial Monday. However, he did not appear in court. Instead, another pretrial was scheduled for May 2. This pretrial is Schneider's final one. If no agreement can be made between Schneider and special prosecutor John O'Donnell, then a jury trial is scheduled to start May 5. Mentor City Council voted to hire John O'Donnell as a special prosecutor in former State Rep. Mark Schneider's drunk driving case during its meeting Tuesday evening. Council approved O'Donnell's appointment to avoid a conflict of interest. Mentor City Prosecutor Lisa Klammer donated to Schneider's successful campaign to serve on the Ohio House of Representatives in 2008 and his unsuccessful re-election bid in 2010, Mentor Law Director Richard Hennig said. Mentor City Council will meet 7 p.m. tonight at city hall. The Council is scheduled to appoint John O'Donnell as a special prosecutor in the Mark Schneider OVI case. Former State Rep. Schneider is accused of driving while drunk in Mentor. However, City Prosecutor Lisa Klammer has donated to Schneider's previous campaign. Consequently, a special prosecutor is expected to be appointed to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Former Ohio State Rep. Mark Schneider pleaded not guilty to driving drunk this morning in Mentor Municipal Court. Schneider, who lives in Mentor, appeared in court with his attorney, Joseph Delguyd. Judge John Trebets ordered Schneider not to drive but let him stay out of jail on bond while awaiting his next court appearance. Schneider's pretrial is scheduled for Feb. 22. Mentor Police arrested Schneider at 1 a.m. Monday. An officer pulled him over for changing lanes without signaling, Mentor Police Lt. Tom Powers said.
