Brandon Ashmore made the 50 billionth download in the App Store's five-year history
A Mentor man now has more download credits than he'll probably ever use. According to an Apple news release, Brandon Ashmore downloaded the 50 billionth application from the company's popular app store. To commemorate the milestone, Apple gave him a $10,000 App Store Gift Card. “They actually called me first, several times, because I didn’t actually believe I won, but then they started saying things that they could not have known (unless it was legitimate),” the 21-year-old told The News-Herald. The winning app was "Say the Same Thing," developed by Space Inch LLC. Ashmore attends Lakeland Community College and is working on a computer science degree, according to the paper. Several companies sponsored schools in AWT's third annual RoboBots
Sparks flew all day Saturday at Lakeland Community College for the third annual RoboBots Competition. The event was produced by the Alliance for Working Together, consortium of area manufacturers working with Lakeland to promote their industry as a viable career option for soon-to-be graduates. Nineteen teams from schools like Lake Catholic, Harvey and Riverside participated in the competition won by Beaumont of Cleveland Heights after six rounds of titanium- and polycarbonate-crushing action. Mad City Money returns this weekend to Lakeland Community College
In one of the more creative scholarship competitions you'll ever see, students will compete in the equivalent of a life-sized board game to earn a $1,200 college scholarship from Cardinal Community Credit Union. The competition, called Mad City Money, allows high school juniors and seniors to show off their budgeting prowess. It will be held from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday at Lakeland Community College. Mad City Money is a kind of game designed to give young people a taste of the real world—complete with occupation, salary, spouse, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments. These young artists won grants for their artwork, which was on display at Lakeland for a month
February was a good month for eight art students from Mentor. Lakeland Community College featured their work in the annual Lake and Geauga County Junior and Senior High School Art Exhibit from Jan. 31 to Feb. 27. At the close of the exhibit, the students won varying grants and awards at the artists' reception and awards ceremony. According to the Mentor Schools website, their work was among 400 selections for this year's gallery. The targets included a coffee shop in Seattle, a movie theater in Colorado, a sikh temple in Wisconsin, an elementary school in Connecticut and -- lest we forget -- Chardon High School. More than ever, the realization has set in that something like this -- what experts call "targeted mass shootings" -- can happen anywhere. The first issue of the Chagrin River Review is available online
Faculty members at Lakeland Community College have created an online literary magazine that publishes original short fiction and poetry. The first issue of the Chagrin River Review features three works of fiction and seven poems that were selected from more 120 submissions. The writers come from as faraway as California and Maine, as well as Ohio. “Taking a literary magazine to the Internet is a great way for us as educators to reach a larger audience,” said one of the Review’s editors, Angela Weaver, assistant professor of English at Lakeland. Lakeland Community College is hosting a Career Expo with more than 70 employers who will be trying to fill hundreds of jobs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in its fitness and athletic center. Those employers include several Mentor businesses like BioLife Plasma Services, STERIS, Hudec Dental, Deepwood and more. Click here for a complete list of employers who will be there. The jobs they are looking to fill range from entry-level positions to skill roles in the health, manufacturing, machining, marketing, sales and other fields. The college recommends that job seekers bring at least 25 copies of their resume, as well as business cards if they have them. They should also prepare questions to ask the employers. 1. ZOMBIE DAY Where/When: Mentor Public Library main branch, noon to 4 p.m., Saturday Why Go: Mentor Public Library will host its first ever zombie invasion, dubbed Z-Day, this weekend. Uninfected teens will gather in the library’s James R. Garfield Room to test their survival skills, including playing zombie trivia. Those who miss questions will become infected and turn into the undead. The last survivors will be awarded prizes. The undead transformations will occur through zombie makeup.
