The dog was about 12 feet into the pipe and covered in water by the time firefighters got it to come out
A Pomeranian received the rescue it needed from the Mentor Fire Department and Lake Humane Society earlier this week. The dog was stuck in a culvert pipe near Bellflower Park on Monday when firefighters responded a concerned resident's call. Fire Lt. Rob Gandee believes the animal spent most of the weekend about 12 feet into the pipe with water up to its upper legs. People tried various methods to get it out, including waving pork chops. "We got him to come out of the hole, and then he took off," Gandee said. "He was like a bullet he moved so fast and then went and hid in the brush." The dog was a bit feisty at first, attempting to bite one of the firefighters, Gandee said. They got the Pomeranian to safety, and the Lake Humane Society

Here's how it works: Stop by any of the four Longo's/Joey's locations and purchase any large 1-topping pizza for $10. All of the proceeds will be donated back to Lake Humane Society. Animal lovers can support the Lake Humane Society while rocking out to local bands this Sunday at Harry Buffalo
Lake Humane Society's Rescue Rock Off is returning for its third year this noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Harry Buffalo, 2119 Mentor Ave., in Painesville. That means people can rock out and help support the rescue animals at the local shelter all in one afternoon. This fundraiser is even more important than usual because the Lake Humane Society is still packed with recovering animals that were seized in a recent hoarding case. The event features five bands who are donating their time to raise money for the animals of Lake Humane Society. Tickets to the event are $15 each and include an all-you-can-eat appetizer buffet. Guests can also enjoy a Chinese Auction, 50/50 Raffle, prize giveaways and more. Last year this event brought in more than …

Lake Humane Society seized 85 cats and three dogs in October from a woman who was hoarding animals; many of them are still available for adoption
The Lake Humane Society is trying to find homes for dozens of animals that were seized from an animal hoarder. On Oct. 17, the Lake Humane Society -- with help from Lake County General Health District -- took in three dogs and 85 cats. They had been taken from 66-year-old Beverly Lewis who had been living with them in Willoughby. Lewis has since pleaded no contest and been found guilty of five counts of prohibitions concerning companion animals in Willoughby Municipal Court. The seizure was one of the largest in Lake Humane Society's history. It was performed by six Lake Humane staff members and took four hours. Each animal had to be captured, photographed, collared for identification and put into cages in the LHS van. "It was a complete …

The deal will help provide care for homeless and abandoned animals
Nothing will change about the pies at J's Pizza Market this week except the organization their proceeds will benefit. For the remainder of the week, the Center Street pizzeria will donate 20 percent of its sales to the Lake Humane Society to provide care and shelter for homeless animals. "Who doesn't love Lake Humane Society," J's owner Jonathan Kelley said, "with those cute, furry faces looking at you? "It's great organization and this was an easy call." Customers can take advantage of the deal for takeout, dine-in and catering orders through Sunday. Be sure to visit the Humane Society's website to print out the sale flyer. It is needed in order to get 20 percent off and support the Humane Society.

Sushi was a stray but he is very affectionate and outgoing; also, he'd love to find a foreever home
Sushi is a 1-year-old domestic long hair tabby who is staying at Lake Humane Society but hoping for a forever home. He came to the shelter as a stray kitty. He is very affectionate and outgoing. Sadly, Sushi tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus so he must be the only cat in the home, as well as an indoor-only cat. But please don't let Sushi's FIV deter you. He is a beautiful boy with so much love to give. Like all cats at LHS, Sushi has been fixed, microchipped and given a physical by the shelter's vet. He is up-to-date on all vaccinations and has been combo tested. For more information on FIV, please click here. Cammi is a very sweet girl who loves to go for walks
Callie is an 11-month-old pit bull mix who cam to Lake Humane Society in November after being transferred from another facility that was full. She is a very sweet girl and she especially likes to be walked. She would be a great family dog and is wonderful with children (though she would be best matched in a family where the children are five and older.) However, admittedly, Cammi doesn't get along as well with cats. On a related note, ff you've been thinking about adopting a pet from Lake Humane Society, now is the time to make your move. For the next three days -- that is, until the end of January -- all adoption fees are half off. Dogs, cats, rabbits, whatever -- all half off. If you would like more information on Cammi or any of the …

This affectionate kitty is available for adoption from the Lake Humane Society
Callie may seem a little nervous; but, once you get to know her, she is relaxed, affectionate and may be perfect for your family. Callie is 10 years old and she came to Lake Humane Society in August because her previous owner could no longer care for her. She can be a little slow to adjust to new surroundings but is comfortable sharing her home with dogs -- so other pets need not be a deterrent. Callie came to the shelter with her front paws declawed. She is also spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. All the animals at Lake Humane Society are half off for the entire month of January. That means a lucky, loving family can adopt Baby for $10. To view more animals available for adoption at Lake Humane Society, visit their …

This outgoing rabbit is a sweetie
Snickers is an outgoing rabbit who has been staying at Lake Humane Society since June but she's looking for a permanent home. She came to the shelter after her owner had to give her up. Snickers is two years old, litter box trained and easy going. Like all animals at the shelter, she is up to date on her shots. Snickers would be well matched in a family with older children (10 or older) and might be good with younger kids. However, it would take a visit to say for certain. All the animals at Lake Humane Society are half off for the entire month of January. That means a lucky, loving family can adopt Snickers for $15.
