Wednesday, February 20
All Mentor Public Schools and Lake Catholic are closed today (Feb. 20) because of the snow and ice on the roads. This is Fairfax Elementary School's sixth calamity day of the year, which means students will need to do their Blizzard Bag assignments. The Blizzard Bag program allows the schools to post prepared assignments online during a calamity day. If 80 percent of students complete their assignments, then the calamity day will not count against the district's total. Fairfax students' Blizzard Bag assignment can be found here: www.mentorschools.net/fairfax. No other school in Mentor has used all of its allotted calamity days, so only Fairfax students need to open their Blizzard Bag.

Borcas was the winner of Grantland's Fantasy Island -- a contest in which 10 writers matched wits and fantasy football acumen. Borcas started playing fantasy football his junior year of high school. He read about the contest on Grantland and thought it would be an opportunity to kickstart his career. He found out he was one of the 10 finalists on Aug. 29. "More specifically, I was sitting in the Smith Lab at Ohio State for my anthropology class, anxiously checking my email because I knew that the contestants would be announced that …

Cougars rally from a 15-13 deficit after holding a 13-3 lead at the intermission
Evan Gormley scored his third touchdown of the night with 6:26 left in the fourth quarter to spell the difference in a 21-15 win over host Strongsville in the season-opening high school football game for both schools. Gormley raced around right end for 23 yards to allow the Cougars to rally from a 15-13 deficit after holding a 13-3 lead at the intermission. The Cougars were able to hold on when a Strongsville drive that started at the Mustang 21, ended when Richie Miller intercepted an Aaron Pritchard pass and brought it out to his eight. Strongsville forced a punt with 20 seconds left and took over at the Lake Catholic 45 with 20 seconds left but the Mustangs were unable to do anything with their final chance. Strongsville, which forced …

Erin Carlisle, née Gaydos, died in a boat explosion Monday that injured six others, including her husband
A Lake Catholic High School graduate and Mentor native died Monday evening after there was an explosion on a boat she and her husband were riding in Pennsylvania. Erin Carlisle died instantly, according to a story in the Erie Times-News. She was 25 years old. Carlisle, whose maiden name is Gaydos, graduated from Lake Catholic High School in 2004. She married Ryan Carlisle on May 15, 2010. They lived in Erie, PA. The boat – a 32-foot Wellcraft named Jimmy Time – had experienced mechanical problems before Monday night, Erie's chief fire inspector told the Erie Time-News. More than 200 seniors received their diploma
As one of Lake Catholic's biggest graduating classes filled the stage, the students beamed smiles at each other and at their parents in the crowd. They filed in — boys wearing green, girls wearing white — and adjusted their tassels accordingly. Two hundred twenty-two students faced their families and their future. The ceremony was held in Mentor High School's Fine Arts Center. Lake Catholic President Sal Miroglotta said the class broke many records, including earning $14.4 million in scholarships, 20,400-plus hours of community service and even nine calamity days. "There will be other records to break in friendship, dignity, honor and effort," Miroglotta said. "We are so proud to call you alumni." The keynote speaker was 1981 alum Norm …

Frank Soria steps away to spend more time with his family
Although the communication technology boom has surrounded us for a while now, former Lake Catholic girls’ basketball coach Frank Soria doesn’t walk around with a cellphone, although he does keep one in the car for emergencies. When Soria announced his retirement from coaching basketball after 18 years last week, he said the energy it took to be a coach these days was no longer in him, and one might have gathered that the age of Facebook, Twitter and 24-hour sports news coverage simply wore him down. Although the 56-year-old math teacher has seen a lot of change from the time he began coaching the Cougars, the era’s switch to touchpads and real-time updates never got in the way of his joy for the people and game he loved at the Mentor …

Mentor Schools has added two more days to the school year to make up for days that were canceled because of weather
Mentor Schools has tacked two more days onto its school year to make up for days when class was canceled because of weather. Instead of ending the school year on June 9, the district will also have class on Friday, June 10, and Monday, June 13. The district used seven calamity days this year because of snow, ice and even flooding. Right now, Ohio school districts are only allotted three calamity days. However, legislation has been suggested that would retroactively increase that number to five. House Bill 36 has already passed through both houses of the state legislature and awaits the governor's signature to be approved. Garfield Elementary School, which required an additional three calamity days because of a fire, will also have class on…

Senior guard scored seven of the team's 10 last points in a 41-39 come-from-behind victory
The Mentor High girls' basketball team was on the ropes against Mayfield Thursday and needed to find itself. Or perhaps, more importantly, it needed to find its leader. Mentor senior guard Kali Deighan had been quiet for most of the Division I District semifinal game at Perry High School, but when her team needed her deep in the fourth quarter, she came through with the winning plays to get them one step closer to a district title. Deighan scored seven of Mentor’s final 10 points, including a crucial game-tying 3-pointer, to lead the Cardinals to a 41-39 come-from-behind victory over Mayfield and advance to the district final. Mentor will face Brush, a 45-37 winner over the Cardinals’ Lake Erie League rival Cleveland Heights. Mentor (10-13…
