James A. Garfield National Historic Site will host a program about the Civil War that should appeal to both dilettantes and history buffs at 2 p.m. this Saturday. “James A. Garfield’s Military Life” will explore Garfield’s time as a Union officer during the Civil War and interpret how that service affected his later life and career. Park Ranger Scott Longert will host the program in the visitor center's auditorium. Park rangers have held Civil War events all year at Garfield's Mentor home to recognize the 150th anniversary of the war, as well as the 180th anniversary of his birth. “Both of these (anniversaries) give us wonderful opportunities to present important aspects of Garfield history to the public. Send Us Your Best Winter Shots of the City's Parks and You Could Win a Grab Bag from Patch
Update: OK, the weather was lousy this week. Consequently, I'm extending the deadline for the photo contest until 10 p.m. on Jan. 31. We all know it's winter and that means it's cold outside, but winter has a beauty of its own. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to visit any of the city, county, state or national parks in Mentor and snap the best winter photo possible. If you win, you get an awesome grab bag from Mentor Patch. So fly little shutterbugs. Get out there, explore the city and, for the love of all things chocolate, dress warmly. (Finally, for a little motivation, check out the winner of our Christmas Lights contest.)
