Garfield Elementary First-Grader Starts Fundraiser to Help Ailing Classmate

Henry Schenk VI began the "Jellybeans for Jacob" fundraiser in order to help a classmate who has been to school only a handful of times this year

Henry Schenk VI admitted to "sweating through my hair" as he recently convinced his principal to approve a school raffle. However, given the condition of a fellow first-grader at Garfield Elementary School, a little perspiration seems minor. Henry and his family are leading the charge behind "Jellybeans for Jacob," a fundraiser that Henry developed to help a friend who he says has not been at school for more than four full days in the 2012-2013 school year. Mentor Schools spokeswoman Kristen Kirby said Jacob's family opted to have only his first name published and, for privacy reasons, described his situation as a "serious medical condition." Parent & Guardian Newsletters Available For All Mentor Elementary & Middle Schools

The newsletters contain information on school events, fundraisers, PTA and more

All of the middle and elementary schools in the Mentor Public Schools district have released their free newsletters online. The newsletters contain information on each schools' parent-teacher conference schedule, local PTA, upcoming fundraisers, spelling bee winners, as well as a calendar of events. The winter newsletters also explain how to tell if your child has the cold or flu and what to do in either instance. Additionally, depending on the school, the newsletters may have information on kindergarten registration, local reading programs, Internet safety tips or even a free student ticket to a Mentor High boys basketball game. Mentor Schools Extends School Year to Make up for Calamity Days

Mentor Schools has added two more days to the school year to make up for days that were canceled because of weather

Mentor Schools has tacked two more days onto its school year to make up for days when class was canceled because of weather. Instead of ending the school year on June 9, the district will also have class on Friday, June 10, and Monday, June 13. The district used seven calamity days this year because of snow, ice and even flooding. Right now, Ohio school districts are only allotted three calamity days. However, legislation has been suggested that would retroactively increase that number to five. House Bill 36 has already passed through both houses of the state legislature and awaits the governor's signature to be approved.
