The national qualifiers were treated like stars as they were cheered throughout the district Monday

A group of nationally recognized Mentor students received the kind of rock-star treatment on Monday they previously only dreamt about. The district brought the Memorial Middle School Science Olympiad team for a bus tour of the district as a show of support before the students head to Dayton on Friday for the national competition. After claiming a runner-up title in the state competition last month. Memorial is the first school in the district's history to reach the national competition. The team members toured the district, stopping at Garfield, Fairfax and Hopkins elementary schools, as well as the Board of Education. At each stop, the elementary students clapped and cheered the national qualifiers through the hallways. By all accounts, …

Fairfax Elementary Is Closed Today Because Of Power Outage

This is its fifth calamity day of the year

Fairfax Elementary School is closed today due to the building not having power. All other schools in the Mentor district are open today. This if Fairfax's fifth calamity day of the year. It lost three days earlier this year after a Hurricane Sandy hangovers knocked out its power and another day earlier this month because of snow. Schools are alotted five calamity days per year. This means -- under normal circumstances -- if a building misses more than five days, they would have to make up the balance some time before the end of the school year. However, all the Mentor Public Schools have an additional 3-day buffer before they need to make up calamity days. This is because the district participates in the Blizzard Bag program. The Blizzard …

Video: Fairfax Students Tape Principal To The Wall For Charity

Fairfax Elementary students raised more than $1,500 for the United Way of Lake County

Fairfax Principal Stephen Heller has done a lot of things to raise money for United Way of Lake County at his school. He's thrown karaoke parties, let the kids wear pajamas or hats, and even taken a few pies in the face. But sometimes a pie in the face isn't enough. Heller capped a 2-week fundraising campaign, which raised more than $1,500, by letting his students duct tape him to the wall of the gymnasium. Students paid $1 each for the privilege. "Even though they're young, I think the students have a pretty good grasp on giving and the importance of giving back," Heller said. "For the past nine years at this school, our culture has been about being there for people in need and making someone's day. The parents, teachers and students are …

Photo Gallery: Veterans Day At Mentor Schools

The schools in the Mentor district -- from elementary to the high school -- commemorated Veterans Day in their way

Several schools in the Mentor district commemorated Veterans Day Friday. Fairfax Elementary students invited family members who are veterans to their school for a special assembly in the morning. At the assembly, several of those students were able to thank their grandparents and parents personally for their service. "Thank you for the sacrifices you made for me, my family and everybody else," Ryan Jacoby told the veterans, including his grandfather, Army BFC Private Frank Koncilia, who is a World War II veteran. Meanwhile, at Mentor High School, Army Capt. Kevin Kleber -- a Mentor High and West Point graduate -- talked to the students about their own responsibility in maintaining the country's freedom. He said it was not enough to thank …
