Busy week doesn't begin to describe it. So much happened in the last seven days, I feel as if I could write "15 Things You May Have Missed This Week." 1. Unfortunately, we have to begin with sad news. Robert Dilgren -- a retired Mentor firefighter and former Fairport Harbor police chief -- passed away this week. Dilgren, an experienced kayaker, was kayaking on Lake Erie near the Mentor Headlands neighborhood when he fell out of his vessel. Two good Samaritans, Timothy Gooding and Mark Humensky, brought him to shore and gave him CPR after Dilgren lost consciousness. Despite their best efforts, both they and the paramedics were unable to save Dilgren. He passed away Wednesday in the Cleveland Clinic. Authorities think a cardiac problem …

Federal Judge Dismisses Mohats' Law Suit Against Mentor Schools

Mohat family has the option to refile two of their complaints at the state level

U.S. District Court Judge Donald C. Nugent has dismissed the lawsuit Eric Mohat's family filed against Mentor Schools. Eric was a a 17-year-old Mentor High School student who killed himself March 27, 2007. Eric's parents, Janis and William Mohat, filed a lawsuit against Mentor Schools after his death, saying their son killed himself because he was bullied and the school did not do enough to stop it. Nugent ruled to dismiss the suit June 1. In the parents' suit, they accused the school district of five specific counts of wrongdoing. They claimed that Mentor Schools: In the suit, the Mohats asked the judge to grant them "compensatory damages, and against the individual defendants an appropriate amount of punitive damages." Ohio Supreme Court Decides Not to Rule on Question in Mohat Lawsuit

The Ohio Supreme Court unanimously decided they should not have heard arguments pertaining to the lawsuit against Mentor Schools

The Ohio Supreme Court has decided that they will not be ruling on a matter of law that pertains to the suit the parents of Eric Mohat filed against Mentor Schools. Eric was a a 17-year-old Mentor High School student who killed himself March 27, 2007. Eric's parents, Janis and William Mohat, filed a lawsuit against Mentor Schools after his death, saying their son killed himself because he was bullied and the school did not do enough to stop it. The Mohats filed their lawsuit in federal court, but U.S. District Court Judge Donald C. Nugent asked the state Supreme Court to rule on one specific legal question. That question is whether a wrongful death suit filed on behalf of a dead person before his or her estate is legally established is …

The Ohio Supreme Court will hear arguments pertaining to the Eric Mohat lawsuit Wednesday. Eric Mohat was a a 17-year-old Mentor High School student who killed himself March 27, 2007. Eric's parents, Janis and William Mohat, filed a lawsuit against Mentor Schools after his death. In the suit, the Mohats said that Eric killed himself because he was bullied and harassed at school, and school employees who knew about the bullying did not do enough to stop it. The suit was filed in federal court, and the Ohio Supreme Court will not hear arguments about the whole suit. Instead, the state court will focus on one specific legal question.
