Photo Gallery: Christmas in July at Eleanor Garfield Park

Kids celebrated Christmas in July with the help of some festive lifeguards and Santa Claus Wednesday

The city of Mentor celebrated Christmas in July this Wednesday at Eleanor B. Garfield Park pool. Kids played games, which were led by festively dressed lifeguards. Santa also made a surprise appearance. He and a pair of helpful elves threw the kids candy and T-shirts from the roof of the pool house.

Meet Santa At Eleanor Garfield Park Today

It's never too soon to celebrate the season with Christmas In July

The city of Mentor will celebrate Christmas in July at 1 p.m. today at Eleanor B. Garfield Park pool. There will be prizes, games and festively dressed lifeguards -- just like the regular Christmas (depending on what your Christmas is like.) Santa is also scheduled to make an appearance. Try to grab some of the candy and T-shirts he and his elves will throw to the crowd from atop the pool house. Santa also made a surprise appearance. He threw the kids candy and T-shirts from the roof of the pool house. All of the fun and festivities are free with a regular priced pool admission. Check out these photos from last year's Christmas In July to get a taste of that winter-by-way-of-summertime wonder.

Mentor Pools Open This Weekend

Getting too hot? Cool down at the city's pools and splash parks

The city of Mentor cannot stop the sun from blazing. It cannot drop the temperature another 20 degrees. However, it can offer you a respite from the heat. The city's three pools (at Civic Center Park, Eleanor Garfield Park and Morton Community Park) and two splash parks open this Saturday. They will stay open until the end of August 26. The pools, while refreshing, are not free. People can pay daily rates (between $5 and $6 depending on age and the pool's location) or get aquatic season passes. For $55, a Mentor adult can swim at all three parks for the entire summer. Passes for Mentor kids or seniors cost $45. Nonresidents pay twice as much for seasonal passes. Mentor Parks and Recreation also offers swimming classes for all skill levels…

EPA Updates Public on Mentor Chemical Spill Cleanup

EPA spokesman said cleanup efforts would likely be finished in 'a week or two'

Nine days after a tractor-trailer fire caused about 3,000 gallons of petroleum-based chemicals to spill near the Route 306/I-90 eastbound entrance ramp, the EPA is still overseeing cleanup efforts. Ohio EPA spokesman Mike Settles said most of the chemicals have been contained but it may still need "a week or two" to finish the job. He said that people are checking the many streams and ponds in the city for pockets of chemical spillage. "Initially, the heavy rain exacerbated things," Settles said. "At this point, we wouldn't mind a little rain to push the pockets down into containment areas." One containment area is the pond in Eleanor Garfield Park, where officials are vacuuming remaining chemicals from the top of the water. Mentor Fire …

Parents Can Buy, Sell Kids Stuff at City Garage Sale

People still have time to register for the Just Kids Stuff Garage Sale this Thursday

Parents looking to buy something for their children or, on contrarily, to get rid of things their kids never use anymore can visit the Just Kids Stuff Garage Sale this Thursday morning at Eleanor B. Garfield Park. Parents will sell toys, clothes, books, high chairs and more from 9 a.m. to noon in the park's pavilion. More than 35 parents have already registered to sell their kids' gently used items. However, people can still rent some space to sell if they're willing to bring their own table. Call the city's Parks and Recreation Department at 440-974-5720 to register. It costs residents $20 and nonresidents $25. You can just pay the morning of the garage sale. It costs nothing to peruse the tables and see if other parents have things you …

Return of the Photo Contest: Mentor Parks in Winter

Send Us Your Best Winter Shots of the City's Parks and You Could Win a Grab Bag from Patch

Update: OK, the weather was lousy this week. Consequently, I'm extending the deadline for the photo contest until 10 p.m. on Jan. 31. We all know it's winter and that means it's cold outside, but winter has a beauty of its own. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to visit any of the city, county, state or national parks in Mentor and snap the best winter photo possible. If you win, you get an awesome grab bag from Mentor Patch. So fly little shutterbugs. Get out there, explore the city and, for the love of all things chocolate, dress warmly. (Finally, for a little motivation, check out the winner of our Christmas Lights contest.)
