Mentor Spends $110K on Deer Management

The figure is from the period that lasted from July to February and includes equipment purchases

Mentor spent $110,584 on its deer management program, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. That's a little over $10,000 more than he originally projected. "That estimate looks to be fairly reasonable at this point," Filipiak said. "A lot of our costs early on were related to equipment purchases, and obviously we won't have as much of that (going forward)." The city manager announced that figure during his report at the regular city council meeting on Tuesday night. It accounts for spending since July 1, when the program "really got going," he said. During that span, the program resulted in the culling of 212 deer. Additionally, 131 deer were killed by bow hunters in Mentor this season. Filipiak said recreation specialists will continue to …

Mentor Residents Talk About Deer Hunting, Culling At City Council Meeting

Both supporters and detractors for the city's deer population management program attended the Council meeting Tuesday and shared their feelings

Ten Mentor residents attended the City Council meeting Tuesday evening to talk about the city's deer population management program, which has included culling and the legalization of bow hunting. Seven were in favor of the program. Three were against it. All spoke passionately. Earl Lauridsen lives near Black Brook Golf Course, one of the places where sharpshooters from Mentor Police Department have culled deer. "I would have to congratulate the program," he said. "It's working in my neighborhod. Some of my plants haven't been desecrated yet this year." Meanwhile, Barbara Welker said she was opposed to both deer hunting and culling. "I think City Council members who voted for the deer-kill program should spend a day with the bow-and-arrow …

Mentor's Deer Hunting Season Ends, Culling To Continue For A Bit Longer

About 126 deer were killed during the city's inaugural hunting season; another 183 deer have been culled by the city thus far

The deer hunting season ended Sunday in Ohio and 126 deer were killed by bow hunters in Mentor this season, said Mentor Parks and Recreation Director Bob Martin. Additionally, the city of Mentor began the culling portion of its deer population management program this year. Martin said that 183 deer have been culled by Mentor Police sharpshooters thus far, and the city has permission from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to cull 22 more. Once a total of 205 deer have been culled, Mentor will finished for the year. Police will continue their culling in Veterans Park and Black Brook Golf Course this week, Martin said. Martin did not know exactly how much deer meat was donated to the Cleveland Food Bank because of the city's culling. …

Deer Money: What Deer Population Management Will Cost Mentor?

Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak breaks down what the Deer Population Management Plan is expected to cost in 2013

When discussing the city of Mentor's Deer Population Management Program and its cost, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak offers two caveats. One, there is no way to know for sure what it will cost until they have committed to the program for an entire year. Two, the city will need to spend some money to make this effective. "You have no choice but to devote a certain amount of resources to this problem (of deer overpopulation) or the problem does not get better," Filipiak said. With that having been said, Filipiak said the program will cost the city about $100,000 next year. Now, for Mentor's expenses to make sense, some explanation of its deer management program is necessary. The program has five parts: educate the public on the dangers of …

Man Convicted Of Violating Mentor's Deer-Hunting Law

The man admitted to trespassing on someone else's property to collect a deer he shot

A man was convicted Tuesday of violating Mentor's new deer hunting law. In October, Timothy Hejuk shot a deer with his bow while on property where he had permission to hunt. However, the deer wandered to an adjacent property on Hopkins Road where Hejuk did not have hunting privileges before it died. Instead of contacting the police department -- which the law requires him to do -- or asking for the neighbor's permission to collect the deer, Hejuk waited until night, sneaked onto the adjacent property and took the deer, Mentor Police Chief Daniel Llewellyn said. When the person who lives on the Hopkins Road property awoke the next day, he found blood from the deer kill on his land and called the polce department. Police located Hejuk and …

Sorry None of your buz, but it is the law and the hunters very well know what is expected of them; there is no excuse for breaking the law. I would agree to help change the law. I would agree to help band hunting deer all together as well in Mentor that is. But to disregard the law all together and expect a slap on the wrist? I do not like the hunting at all. God bless.   more ›

Mentor Deer Hunter Permit Packets Available Online

All the information one needs to get a deer bow hunting permit is available online

Mentor City Council, by a margin of 5 to 2, recently approved an ordinance that allows the bow hunting of deer on private property in the city under specific circumstances. The ordinance says: For those interested in applying for hunting permits in Mentor, the permit packet is available on the city's web site. (It is also attached to this story as a PDF.) To receive a permit, hunters will need to pass an archery hunting qualification test that is available for free at Gander Mountain. Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak previously said that hunting is just one part of the city's plan to control the deer population. Additionally, the city still has every intention of instituting a culling program with sharpshooters, he said. "This is just …

I sincerely hope the culling program with sharpshooters is a success as the hunting ordinance stands little chance of having any impact on the deer population. The fellow hunters I've discussed it with agree the hunting ordinance bureaucracy ensures no hunter would bother trying to hunt in Mentor - they will happily go elsewhere. Passing the hunting ordinance offers only lip service to Mentor …   more ›

Cleveland Clinic, Joseph Thomas & Deer Hunting: A Week In Review

Catch up on the biggest news stories of the week

1. This was a big news week in Mentor. A lot of long-simmering issues (both good and bad) came to the surface. For example, Cleveland Clinic has demonstrated an interest in developing on 47 acres in the Newell Creek. That could potentially be huge -- maybe even hundreds of jobs huge. After all, one does not simply acquire 47 acres to park cars. For now, the Clinic is being cautious about discussing its intentions. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to acquire land in Mentor," said Heather Phillips, the director of corporate communications for the Clinic. "At this time, no specific decisions have been made regarding potential uses of the land. 2. The trial of Joseph Thomas -- the man accused of raping and …

Mentor City Council Votes To Legalize Bow Hunting Of Deer

Council Members Robert Shiner and Carolyn Bucey vote against majority

A 5-2 majority of City Council voted for an ordinance that legalized bow hunting of deer in Mentor The vote occurred during a City Council meeting Tuesday night at City Hall. The ordinance says: Council Members Carolyn Bucey and Robert Shiner voted against the ordinance. Bucey said she agreed that the city of Mentor had a problem with deer overpopulation. However, she supported a full-on culling program as opposed to bow hunting. Bucey noted that Rick Tyler, who oversaw the Cleveland Metroparks' deer culling program before he retired, suggested the city have a culling program in place before it legalize hunting. Meanwhile, Shiner said the city should not legalize bow hunting and then institute a broader culling program. If anything, he …

Bow hunting is cruel and inhumane. The heartless "murderers" that call themselves hunters don't care about the suffering of a harmless deer. They lay in wait hiding to kill. Small minded idiots that get their jollies off of surpriising and killing a deer just standing there is just so sick. I thought the parks protected and preserved wildlife. Not anymore. You will NEVER hunt on my property.   more ›

Mentor City Council To Revisit Deer Hunting Ordinance Tonight

The city will discuss the recently proposed legislation that would allow bow hunting of deer on private property in Mentor

Mentor City Council will once again discuss proposed legislation that would, if passed, allow for the bow hunting of deer in the city. The ordinance is on the schedule to be discussed at a work session 5:30 p.m. today at City Hall. It is also on the agenda for the Council meeting at 7 p.m. tonight. Earlier this year, Council gave the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This latest ordinance is only part of the city's ultimate plan and not its totality, city officials said. The ordinance proposes: City Council discussed the proposed ordinance at their last meeting. However, some Council members had concerns about it so they decided to…

This article proves that the deer killing program has everything to do with hunting and absolutely nothing to do with anything else. I hope Mentor does not lower themselves to the level of Solon and other cities where the adminstration has become shills for the hunting lobby. They should keep in mind that hunting or culling as they like to sanitize the word, does nothing to control the size of …   more ›

Gander Mountain Teaches Urban Deer Hunting At Library

Experts even set up a tree stand at Mentor Public Library to show how it's properly done

Urban deer hunting has been a hot topic in the city this summer with Mentor City Council considering the legalizing of bow hunting on private property. Consequently, a joint seminar from Gander Mountain and Mentor Public Library is aptly timed. Experts from Gander Mountain, as well as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, offered tips on deer hunting and tree stand setups. Gander Mountain Store Manager Kevin Matty and Zone Supervisor Mitch Leppelmeier reviewed baiting techniques, and the safe operation of the compound bow and crossbow used to harvest deer in urban areas. Later the men demonstrated the safe way to arm and disarm a bow and the use of a haul line to pull up and lower gear and unloaded bows to a tree stand. Later in the …
