Photo Gallery: Cardinals Visit Heartland

Students from Mentor High School visited Heartland of Mentor for Valentine's Day

Teresa Teskac had been voted the Valentine's Queen by her friends Tuesday afternoon at Heartland of Mentor. After her coronation, she was asked if she had any romantic advice for the students from Mentor High School who had visited the assisted living center for the Valentine's dance. Teskac took the microphone, paused to think and then said, "Do well in school... and don't marry too quick." Both the students and seniors laughed with Teskac. Then the music came on and the dance floor filled again. Students from the National Honor Society, basketball team and the early education program came to Heartland to celebrate Valentine's Day. They danced with the residents, provided sweet treats and even tried out a few pick-up lines. "I must be in …

Photo Gallery: Valentine's Day At The Library

Kids made their own cards with glitter, paper, ribbons and candy

Kids had two ways to celebrate Valentine's Day Monday at the Mentor Public Library. Younger children used construction paper, glitter glue and other crafty supplies to make dog-shaped valentine's day cards. Meanwhile, preteens and teens made gift bouquets with chocolate, suckers and ribbon. If you're still looking for a way to spread the love, the library is holding a raffle in which the winners will get a book bag with Valentine's treats. All you have to do to enter is pick up a form at any of the three library branches and write why you love the library on it. Or if somebody would rather express their love of the library by drawing on the form -- that's OK too. All the forms will be entered into a drawing; and, on March 1, three …

Get Free Qdoba For A Kiss

Qdoba customers can buy one entree and get a second one free if they smooch a significant other, friend or understanding stranger

What's sweeter than a kiss on Valentine's Day? How about a free entree from Qdoba? Customers who buy one entree at the Mentor Qdoba restaurant and then share a kiss with a significant other, friend, family member or even a willing stranger at the cash register will receive a second entree of equal or lesser value for free. Guests need no coupon -- just lips and a willing partner. (Kisses forced upon the unwilling will not count and are bad form.) "Last year we debuted our BOGO for a Kiss Valentine’s Day promotion and thousands of Qdoba guests lined up to share a smooch and receive a great Qdoba offer in return," said Karen Guido, Qdoba’s chief marketing officer, in a statement. "After such a strong response last year, we knew we had to …

Red Cross Cancels Blood Drive In Anticipation Of Teamsters Strike

Platelet donations at three Red Cross donor centers will also be canceled

There is no love between the American Red Cross and Teamsters Local 507 this Valentine's Day. The Red Cross has canceled its annual blood drive this Tuesday at Landerhaven Executive Caterers in anticipation of a Teamsters strike. Platelet donations at three Red Cross donor centers will also be canceled. The Red Cross released a statement blaming the union for the event's cancellation. "It is unconscionable that this union would consider potentially compromising the lives of patients to further their own agenda," said Christy Sabaka, Regional Communications Program Manager, in the statement. Meanwhile, the Teamsters released its own statement, saying the Red Cross has cut staffing to levels that are unsafe for donors to improve profit …

Photo Gallery: Hopkins Elementary Visits Parker Place

Some fifth graders from Hopkins helped Parker Place residents make valentines

The fifth grade ambassadors from Hopkins Elementary visited Parker Place Thursday morning. Armed with stickers, construction paper, puff paint and glitter, the students helped the residents make valentines. Officials from the school and assisted living center both said they hope the morning's field trip is just the first of many shared events.

Moms Talk: Valentine's Day Plans

What's the ideal Valentine's Day for a mom?

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: What would be your ideal Valentine's Day plans? Devone Lansing: My "ideal" plans have changed since we've had kids. We used to go on romantic dates (dinner, the beach, something like that) but now we don't... no time and no money for such frivolities! My husband usually makes chocolate-covered strawberries and bananas (they are the BEST) for me and the kids help him. It's fun and delicious. Mary Jo Stack: I am not a big Valentine's Day fan. But if my husband really wanted to celebrate just going out to dinner and having someone else cook and clean up is just fine with me.

Photo Gallery: Little Princess Valentine's Dance

Did the Patch camera spot you and your little princess at the dance?

Daddies, granddaddies and daughters packed the Mentor Senior Center Friday night for the 11th annual Little Princess Valentine Dance. Fathers and their favorite gals could enjoy games, refreshments and, of course, dance. More than 200 people attended the special evening. I saw a lot of the dads and granddads out there with cameras, so feel free to add your own photos to the gallery.

Thanks Jason nice pics. We had a great time. My daughter asked me how many years we are going to keep going to the dance. I told her as long as she will let me take her because it's very special to me. She said "what if I'm 35?" I told her that will not be a problem for me. :)   more ›
