Jellybeans, juice boxes and laughter were on the menu
The holidays are a time to pass on traditions and Mentor Public Library librarian Lisa Layton, a self-described Charles Schultz fan, got the chance to share her love for “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” with children at the library. "It's really special to hear the children laughing at the same parts of the movie that I laughed at as a kid,” she said. After watching the classic, the librarians recreated Snoopy's feast from the story for the kids with toast, jelly beans, pretzels, pudding, popcorn and a juice box. The feast on Nov. 19 served as an appetizer for the real feast for the kids. “Well, Charlie Brown had jellybeans but I am going to have turkey,” Matthew Grbavac observed. Sophie Martucci, 6, had no complaints with the Snoopy-style …

There’s a Garth Brooks song that says “some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.” It took a lot of growing up for me to really understand these words of wisdom, but now I think I finally get it. I’m thankful that I’m an only child. If I had siblings, I probably wouldn’t be nearly as close to my cousins. I’m thankful for all the times that my daddy said no when I asked permission to do something – he saved me from a lot of danger, heartache and tears. All of those no’s meant that he loved me – that he cared. I’m thankful that my parents divorced. If they hadn’t, I never would have known my stepmom or my stepdad and my kids would have missed out on two wonderful grandparents. I’m thankful that I didn’t marry my high school …

Have a happy and safe holiday
Here are some safety tips from Mentor Fireman Nathan Peters. Enjoy them and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving: The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food. Dinner can be ruined by the “I just left for a moment to …” accident. Do you know how to put out a stove top fire that is contained in a pan? Put a lid on it, then turn off the heat, let it cool and call 911. These steps can help contain the fire to the pan until the fire department arrives. See the following video at http://www.usfa.fema.gov/fireservice/prevention_education/strategies/cooking/index5.shtm. Stay in the home when baking, and check on the turkey frequently. Use a …
That's your annual turkey consumption, according to U.S. Census
In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims, early settlers of Plymouth Colony, held a 3-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest, an event many regard as the nation’s first Thanksgiving. Today, we're still feasting. Here are some facts about the holiday from the U.S. Census Bureau. 13.3 pounds The quantity of turkey consumed by the typical American in 2009, with no doubt a hearty helping devoured at Thanksgiving time. Per capita sweet potato consumption was 5.3 pounds. 248 million The number of turkeys expected to be raised in the United States in 2011. That’s up 2 percent from the number raised during 2010. The turkeys produced in 2010 together weighed 7.11 billion pounds and were valued at $ 4.37 billion. 1.1 billion pounds Total production of…

A turkey can't just sit alone on the table. Here are some recipes for Thanksgiving's most popular side dishes.
We've already suggested some creative ways to cook a turkey this Thanksgiving but what would a turkey be without its faithful side companions? Often more popular than the turkey itself, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and other favorites are staples of the food coma-inducing meal. Try one of the recipes below to bring a new taste to your Thanksgiving feast. Roasted Winter Squash Gauge the amount of squash you’ll need by allowing 1 small squash (acorn and butternut are good choices) for every four people. Cut each squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Brush sides and inner cavity with olive oil and place flesh-side down on a lightly-oiled baking sheet. Roast for approximately 45 minutes or until flesh is very soft and easy …

Thankfulness cannot be overrated! We fail so often to be thankful enough for what makes us who we are, and for all the good (and not-so-good) things that come our way. I'm glad God knows what we need even though sometimes we don't, and I am thankful that He has blessed and kept you through all the events in your life so far. God is good, God is Great!   more ›
