Dragan and Celija Vidovic sued Mentor Schools after their 16-year-old daughter, Sladjana, killed herself in 2008
Today, the U.S. District Court Judge Donald C. Nugent dismissed the lawsuit that Dragan and Celija Vidovic had filed against Mentor Public Schools in 2010. Their 16-year-old daughter Sladjana had attended Mentor High School before she killed herself in 2008. In their lawsuit, the Vidovics claimed the school knew their daughter was being bullied but they did not do enought to prevent it. The suit also claimed that, as a result of the constant bullying and harassment, Sladjana had to leave the school and eventually became so depressed that she committed suicide. In addition to the school district as a whole, then Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes, former MHS Principal Joseph Spiccia and guidance counselor Pamela Goss, as well as 10 unnamed …

Chrysalis, a support group for relatives and friends of suicide victims, is hosting a special memorial service at 2 p.m. this Sunday at St. Andrew Episcopal Church. Remembering and Healing is a free, nondenominational service that is open to anyone whose life has been impacted by suicide. No RSVP is necessary. Those planning on attending are invited to bring a photo of their loved one to display on a memorial table during the service. The parent organization for Chrysalis is the Lake County Suicide Prevention Coalition. Rae Grady of the Coalition says the service has been designed to help further the often difficult healing process for families and individuals. "Suicide can have an especially brutal impact on those left behind," Grady said…

Organizations across the county talk about what you can do if you see warning signs in someone you know

For example, there were three suicides all of last year in Mentor, according to the Mentor Police Department. However, this year, three people killed themselves just in July. One of them did it publicly in Krueger Park. Since January, there have been seven suicides in the city -- more than in the entirety of 2009 (when there were five) or 2010 (six.) Meanwhile, in Lake County, the number of suicides has grown from 21 in 2009 to 36 last year, according to the Lake County Coroner's Office. And, with 26 already, that number will likely increase again in 2012. And the problem is not just contained to Northeast Ohio, Rae Grady explained. Grady works for…

Principal Joe Spiccia reflects on his eight years at Mentor High School and 30 years in education
"When you shake it all out, it's about helping people," Joe Spiccia said. That was his reflection, not just on his eight years as principal at Mentor High School, but his 30 years in education. "It's not just about teaching them algebra," he added. Spiccia will retire as principal during the summer and start consulting school districts on the national Race to the Top program. Spiccia, who is still relatively young at 53, said he and his wife had always intended for him retire from his full-time job once their children were firmly established on their own. Like all retirees, Spiccia said he would miss the people. However, he specified that he especially liked helping students and teachers find what they want to do with their lives. "It's …
