Coach Steve Trivisonno, Quarterback Mitch Trubisky, Wide Receiver Brandon Fritts, Kicker Mike Muzic and graduate Adam Watson were all recognized during the dinner
The Mentor Cardinals may have played their final football game of the school year in November, but they are still receiving awards for their memorable season in which they went 12-2 and reached the state semifinal. Several Cardinals were recognized during The Cleveland Touchdown Club Charities awards banquet Saturday. Steve Trivisonno, along with Kirtland's Tiger LaVerde, received Co-Coach of the Year honors for Lake and Geauga County. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky added to his already lengthy list of awards by receiving the Lou Groza Most Valuable Scholastics Player Award. Kicker Mike Muzic received the President’s High School Special Teams Player Award, beating out special teams players from across the region. Wide Receiver Brandon Fritts …

Cardinals run out of gas against high-powered Panther offense
The Mentor Cardinals kept pace with the Toledo Whitmer Panthers for 2 1/2 quarters Saturday night. However, the Cardinals gradually ran out of fuel while the Panthers kept chugging away en route to a 62-34 win. "They battled their tails off," Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno said of his team. "They played hard all this year. They just ran out of gas at the end there." The Mentor Cardinals ran a hellacious gauntlet to make it to the Div. 1 state semifinal. They had to beat Warren Harding, St. Edward and St. Ignatius. Against Edward, they had to overcome a 21-point deficit. It took three overtimes to finally supplant Ignatius. By comparison, Whitmer had an easier path. "They're fresh," Trivisonno said of Whitmer. "They had a cakewalk in …

The Cardinals win regional championship by going through the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year and the only team to beat them this season
"To win Region 1, you have to go through St. Ignatius," Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky said after the Cardinals' 57-56 win over the Wildcats Saturday night. That was true when Ignatius knocked the Cardinals out of the playoffs in the regional championship last year. However, now Mentor has more than revenge. They have the regional championship and they won it in spectacular fashion. It came down to one play in triple overtime. Mentor and Ignatius traded touchdowns for two overtimes. Then Wildcats Michael LaManna tossed a touchdown pass to running back Timothy McVey. The Cardinals responded in kind. A pass from Trubisky to Connor Krizancic set up a Trubisky touchdown run. Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno knew his defense was tired and …

Cardinals face St. Ignatius next
When you’re caught in a shootout and it’s decidedly not going your way, it’s probably not a bad idea to have the best gunslinger in Northeast Ohio on your side, particularly when you’re down a whole bunch late in a nervy fracas. Senior quarterback Mitch Trubisky further cemented his name in Mentor lore when he whipped a touchdown pass to Brandon Fritts with 33 seconds remaining and erased a 21-point, second-half deficit as the Cardinals won, 63-56, over St. Edward, the top-ranked team in the state. The Cardinals will now face defending state champion and arch nemesis St. Ignatius in the regional final for the right to go to the Division I Final Four. St. Ignatius blasted North Royalton, 56-0, in a game that ended virtually an hour earlier …

Mentor's head football coach talks about the team's keys to victory in this Q&A
It's been nearly two months since the Mentor Cardinals lost a game. Head coach Steve Trivisonno says that won't happen again if his team approaches offense, defense and special teams in an aggressive manner. Mentor will host a playoff game at 7 p.m. Saturday night against the Warren G. Harding Raiders in a No. 4 vs. No. 5 matuchup of the OHSAA Division I regional tournament. It's unclear who Mentor would face if the team advances. The No. 1-No. 8 matchup was originally between St. Edward and Mayfield, but a court decision could land Cleveland Heights in the No. 8 spot. Amid playoff preparation, Trivisonno answered a few questions regarding what it will take for the Cardinals to come out on top. Mentor Patch: What has the vibe around …

Cardinals top Twinsburg Tigers 41-0
The story for the entire season has been the Mentor Cardinals' offense, specifically North Carolina recruit Mitch Trubisky and his cadre of talented receivers. And for most of the season the Cardinals' defense said they were underrated. Well, the defense guaranteed Mentor (9-1) would be the NEO Conference Valley Division champions by shutting out a talented Twinsburg Tigers team (6-4) Friday night at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. The Tigers, who do have playmakers including quarterback Jalen Washington and running back Tyrone McGuinea, could not generate any momentum against the Cardinals staunch defense. Mentor sacked the Tigers five times, costing Twinsburg a total of 52 yards, and intercepted them twice. "They played really hard on defense…

In the first quarter of the Mentor-Strongsville football game Friday night, Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky was almost perfect. He connected on all 10 of his pass attempts -- one of which went for a touchdown -- and accrued 200 yards. The rest of the Cardinals were pretty close to perfect, as well. By the end of the first half, the Cardinals scored so many points it looked like they were playing basketball. The Strongsville Mustangs (2-7) scored so few it seemed as if they were playing soccer. The score was already 45-0 at the half en route to a 54-7 rout. This onslaught has become common place for the Cards (8-1). They have outscored their last five opponents 63-21, 45-14, 55-0, 49-21 and 56-28. No team has come within 28 points of …

Cardinals trounce a tough Blue Devils squad 49-21
It's fair to say the Mentor Cardinals (5-1) have found their rhythm. In their last three games they have accrued 149 points. Friday night, they dominated a tough Brunswick squad 49-21. "As a team, it was our best performance of the season," Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno said. Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for five touchdowns and ran for another. That would be a career night for many quarterbacks. For Trubisky and the Cardinals offense, this is becoming typical. "Just another day at work," Trivisonno joked, when asked about Trubisky's performance. Then he added, "He's a special player. What more can be said?" However, as with every game this season except last week's shutout against Parma, the Cardinals allowed the other …

Mentor Cardinals score 45 unanswered points in 45-14 rout
The Mayfield football team scored first Friday night. But Mentor scored second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. The Cardinals scored 45 unanswered points in a 45-14 rout of the Mayfield Wildcats. A big reason Mentor ran away with the game was wide receiver Conner Krizancic. Krizancic ran for 38 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 74 yards and another touchdown. Most of those touches and all of those touchdowns came in the first half. "Had we kept going to him in the second half, he would have had a career night," Mentor Head Coach Steven Trivisonno said of Krizancic. Krizancic hurt his collarbone when the Cardinals played Erie McDowell, PA, two weeks ago and it still hurt last week against St. …
