The newsletters contain information on school events, fundraisers, PTA and more
All of the middle and elementary schools in the Mentor Public Schools district have released their free newsletters online. The newsletters contain information on each schools' parent-teacher conference schedule, local PTA, upcoming fundraisers, spelling bee winners, as well as a calendar of events. The winter newsletters also explain how to tell if your child has the cold or flu and what to do in either instance. Additionally, depending on the school, the newsletters may have information on kindergarten registration, local reading programs, Internet safety tips or even a free student ticket to a Mentor High boys basketball game. Here are links to the newsletters, which are available as PDFs:

The eighth annual Epilepsy Assocation Winter Walk returned Saturday to the Great Lakes Mall. Walkers raised money and awareness for families affected by epilepsy both in Mentor and at the SouthPark Mall in Strongsville. Paul Orlousky of WOIO news hosted the Mentor walk. He noted that his family has also been affected by epilepsy, telling the crowd that his father had his first seizure more than 50 years ago. Each year, the Epilepsy Association highlights local families who have struggled with the disease at the Winter Walk. This year, they features the Kovi and Konover families: Mark and Shanna Kovi’s youngest son, Griffin was diagnosed with epilepsy at 14 months old after he had his first grand mal seizure. The Kovi family was nominated …

See what happened in Mentor this week
1. Before we begin, watch this video of Sterling Morton Elementary elementary students taping their teacher, Chuck Levkulich, to the wall. It may not have been the biggest story this week in Mentor but it's certainly the one that made me laugh the most. 2. A Mentor woman is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a preschool she helped operate. Stacy Nease, 37, is the former president of the Mentor Co-Operative Preschool. From 2009 to 2011, she was in charge of the preschool's finances. During that time, she stole $6,900 from the preschool, Mentor Police said. 3. The city of Mentor is rolling out a new sidewalk repair program. It will make the sidewalks safer but it may also cost you some money. Read more about it here. 4. The …

Some of the teacher's coworkers also took his shoes; but it's OK because it is for a good cause
The students of Sterling Morton Elementary cheered for their teacher, Chuck Levkulich, like he was a conquering hero. The chant of "Mr. L" echoed through the school's gym Wednesday afternoon. But it was the students, and not Levkulich, who were the heroes. They raised $1,445 for Leukemia-Lymphoma Society and, as a reward, they were allowed to duct tape Levkulich to the wall. Levkulich's coworkers even had some more fun at his expense. They snatched his shoes once he was stuck to the wall and wrote "I Love The Browns" across the Steelers fan's tape. The fundraiser was organized by student council coordinators Susan Stauffer and Jacqui Spetrino. Taping teachers and administrators has become a trend at Mentor Schools this year. First, …

Some of the items on display will be auctioned to raise money for the Mentor Schools Foundation
Sterling Morton Elementary will host a special art show from 5:30 to 6 p.m. this Wednesday and Thursday. Art from all of the school's students will be displayed. Some of the pieces will later be auctioned to raise money for the Mentor Schools Foundation. Those pieces include a guitar that was painted by the students and a special fireplace that was donated by a parent. Students glazed tiles and laid them on the fire place's mantle, said Sterling Morton art teacher Jacqui Spetrino. People can bid on this artwork and more created by Mentor students during the annual art auction April 20 at Gallery One. This year's theme is Harmony Through Art. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Mentor Schools Foundation. The foundation, in turn, …

The fourth graders of Sterling Morton brought classic works of art to life
Taylor McKinzie's face was painted white and framed so she could portray Andy Warhol's famous "Mickey Mouse" -- one of his pop art portraitures that blurred the line between high and low art -- Thursday afternoon at Sterling Morton Elementary School. Taylor explained who she was to a group of curious kindergarteners and why Warhol, played by classmate Michael Futchi, created her. "So what do you think? Am I a work of art?" Taylor concluded. The kindergartners considered her question for a moment. Then, one replied, "You look like Mickey Mouse." While not everyone grasped the messages of the fourth grade class's Talking Art Museum, the students who participated certainly learned a lot about art and had fun doing it. The fourth graders …
