Stacey Robinson's attorney said stress from losing his son, as well as financial pressures, caused him to make a bad decision
"I'm not a bad person," Stacey Robinson told Lake County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Gibson. "I just did a bad thing that day." The day to which Robinson referred to is Aug. 29, 2012, when he robbed the PNC Bank in Mentor. Robinson had previously pleaded guilty to the bank robbery and was sentenced Wednesday in Gibson's court. Robinson's attorney, Assistant Lake County Public Defender Margaret Campbell, said stress led Robinson to make a bad decision. His son had died from a gunshot earlier that year, she said. Mentor man Stacey Robinson has admitted to robbing the PNC Bank in Mentor. Robinson, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery in Lake County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Gibson's court room. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9. Robinson faces between one and three years in prison. The bank was robbed on Aug. 29. Robinson entered the bank, wearing a black leather hat, striped collared shirt and dark colored pants, police said. He handed the teller a note, demanding money. He never showed a weapon, police said. After Robinson was given money, he fled from the bank on foot. However, witnesses recognized Robinson as a customer at the bank, police said. The man suspected of robbing the PNC Bank in Mentor -- and possibly the Dollar Bank, as well -- was arraigned Thursday morning in Mentor Municipal Court. Stacey Robinson, 46, of Mentor, faces one charge of robbery, at this point. However, he could face more charges when the investigation is completed, police said. Robinson only had two choices during his hearing Thursday morning. He could plead not guilty to the robbery charge or make no plea. He chose to make no plea. Judge John Trebets set Robinson's bond at $150,000, which was not posted. Robinson also faces a misdemeanor traffic count of failing to yield. Mentor Police have identified Stacey Robinson as the man who is suspected of robbing the PNC Bank Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses recognized Robinson, 46, as a previous customer at the bank, Mentor Police Sgt. Richard Slovenkay said. Robinson lives in Mentor in the Mentor Mall Village Apartments so policemen began checking the area for him. Officers spotted Robinson about an hour after the robbery so they stopped and arrested him. Robinson has been charged with robbery and will be arraigned 8 a.m. Thursday in Mentor Municipal Court. Robinson is also being investigated as a possible suspect in the Dollar Bank robbery, which occurred this June in Mentor.
