Planning Commission Tables Permit For Proposed Speedway On Heisley

Commission also approves design re-imaging for Classic Hyundai dealership at Thursday's meeting

Mentor Planning Commission voted to table a request for a permit to run a Speedway service station at 5700 Heisley Road during its meeting Thursday. The property is currently the home of Sohl's Service Center. Mentor Planning Administrator Ric Spence and the Planning Commission were concerned about traffic near the Heisley-Diamond Center intersection. Consequently, Spence suggested that -- should the permit for the service station be approved -- that drivers not be permitted to turn left into or out of its driveway. However, Greg Schunck of Richard Bowen & Associates -- the business that applied for the permit -- said a no-left-turn rule would make it very difficult for business. New Speedway Could Be Coming To Heisley Road

Planning Commission can vote on conditional use permit and preliminary site plan for the service station and convenience store tonight

When David Bradt of Richard R. Bowen & Associates applied to build a Speedway service station on Mentor Avenue -- it would have replaced the former Kronheim's Furniture building -- the Planning Commission voted 6-1 against giving Bradt a conditional use permit, which essentially nixed the project. At the time, the Commission voiced concerns that the lot was not big enough for a Speedway service station and convenience store. Undeterred, Bradt has suggested another location for a Speedway in Mentor -- 5700 Heisley Road, the former home of Sohl's Service Center.
