Mitch Trubisky threw six touchdown passes in bad weather to defeat the Solon Comets.
Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw six touchdown passes as the Cardinals defeated Solon 56-28. Mentor is now 6-1 and Solon falls to 4-3. Trubisky's final numbers were stellar: He completed more than 75 percent of his passes for more than 300 yards, with the six touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for more than 100 yards. Nick Delisa ran for one touchdown and caught two more. Brandon Fritts scored three touchdowns each. Conner Krizancic also snagged a touchdown catch. The Comets had two special teams mistakes early and gave up 21 first quarter points to Mentor. The Cardinals had 42 points at halftime. Win sets up rematch with St. Ignatius in Regional Final
The rematch is over. St. Ignatius is up ahead. And Mentor can put Saturday’s near disaster against Solon behind them. The top-seeded Cardinals almost squandered a four-touchdown lead but held on late to knock off the fifth-seeded Comets, 42-40, in a wild Division I, Region 1 semifinal matchup at Byers Field in Parma. Mentor improved to 11-1 on the season and will play another regular season foe in second-seeded St. Ignatius next Saturday in the regional final. The game’s site will be announced Sunday. The Cardinals defeated the Wildcats at home, 38-24, on Sept. 9. Solon’s season ends at 10-2. The Mentor Cardinals are still alive in the state playoffs, surviving a barrage of turnovers and a second half surge from the Solon Comets to win 42-40. Congratulations to all the players on both teams for great seasons and a hardfought game. Best of luck to Mentor against St. Ignatius next week. Mentor Quarterback Mitch Trubisky runs for three touchdowns and throws another as the Cardinals overwhelmed the Comets at Stewart Field.
Mentor Quarterback Mitch Trubisky has led the Cardinals to victory this season behind the strength of his arm. On Thursday night, against the tough Solon Comets, Trubisky led with his feet. The star quarterback rushed for three touchdowns and threw one more to receiver Brandon Fritts to propel the Cardinals over the Solon Comets 44-20. Mentor is now 7-0. The Comets fall to 6-1. The loss snapped Solon's 26-game regular season winning streak. The Comets got off to a shaky start with two fumbles in the first half, giving Mentor great field position both times. The Cardinals frankly didn't need it: Trubisky led them up and down the field at will. They put 27 points on the scoreboard in the first half. But Solon clawed back from the turnovers …
