See what's happening in and around Mentor this week

1. CELEBRATE MENTOR CIVIC ICE ARENA'S 30TH ANNIVERSARY Where/When: Mentor Civic Ice Arena, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Why Go: The Ice Arena will celebrate its 30th anniversary this Saturday with games, prizes and demonstrations from local youth hockey teams and figure skaters. The schedule for the day is: From 9 to 11 a.m., there will be a pancake breakfast. The donations from the breakfast go to the Special Skaters program, which teaches skating in a fun way to youths and adults with disabilities. Next, professional coaches will be offering free lessons from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Then, the west rink will have open skating from noon to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, there will be hockey clinics for children from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Afterward, the east …

Snowy Softball Tournament To Raise Money For CancerCare

There's still time to sign up a team and play

Hate cancer? Like softball? Don't mind the cold? Then we have the softball tournament for you. The SPC Sports Softball League is holding a pair of "snowball" tournaments at Mentor High School. The first is for mens teams and will be this Saturday. The second tournament is coed and will be Jan. 19. Both are one day, double elimination, one-pitch adult softball tournaments. Each team entry costs $250. All proceeds from the tournaments will be donated to CancerCare, including donations by the teams and umpires. There will also be a raffle to raise money for CancerCare during the mens tournament at noon on Jan. 12. Each raffle ticket costs $5. Mentor Firefighters Host Matt Henk Foundation Benefit Softball Tournament

The fourth annual tournament helps raise money for the family of deceased firefighter Matt Henk, as well as other charitable causes

Last year, softball teams from as far away as Indianapolis, Detroit and Baltimore  gathered in Mentor for the annual Matt Henk Foundation Benefit Tournament. This year, it's even bigger. Fifty-two teams from across the country will play against each other July 28 and 29, having fun while raising money for a worthy cause. The International Association of Firefighters Local 1845 (the Mentor firefighers' union) began the tournament to raise money for the family of Matt Henk, a Mentor fireman who died from colon cancer in 2009. He left behind behind a wife and twin daughters. Since its inception, this tournament has grown each year to the point where the money raised from it can go to other noble causes as well, including Mentor Youth Hockey, …

Mentor Sports Hall of Hall Inducts Tenth Class

Standout teams, players and coaches from football, volleyball, track, golf and more are admitted as part of tenth class

The Mentor Sports Hall of Fame inducted its 2011 class, its tenth overall, this September. It included standout players, coaches and teams from the school district's storied sports history, according to the Mentor Schools website. Deepwood Special Olympics Golf, Softball Teams Move on to State Championships

Both teams will compete in Ohio championships this month

Both the softball and golf Special Olympics teams from Deepwood beat their regional division opponents and will play in the state championship tournaments this month. The Division II softball team showed its prowess by beating Geauga County’s Metzenbaum Center and Stark County's team to qualify for the state competition this Saturday in Oregon, OH. Meanwhile, the 19 duos on the golf team competed on Aug. 7 and three of the partnerships will go on to the state championship Sept. 19 and 20 at the Meadow Links in Cincinnati. The golf team consists of 19 duos. Each includes a Deepwood client and a typically developing partner. The duo takes turns on strokes during the game.
