All Mentor Public Schools and Lake Catholic are closed today (Feb. 20) because of the snow and ice on the roads. This is Fairfax Elementary School's sixth calamity day of the year, which means students will need to do their Blizzard Bag assignments. The Blizzard Bag program allows the schools to post prepared assignments online during a calamity day. If 80 percent of students complete their assignments, then the calamity day will not count against the district's total. Fairfax students' Blizzard Bag assignment can be found here: www.mentorschools.net/fairfax. No other school in Mentor has used all of its allotted calamity days, so only Fairfax students need to open their Blizzard Bag.

Both a lake effect snow warning and wind chill advisory are still active until Wednesday morning
The students of Mentor Schools and Lake Catholic will have a 4-day weekend. The schools are closed today (Jan. 22) because of the snow and wind chill. Mentor Schools made the announcement on their web site. They added that high school exams -- which were scheduled to start today -- will begin tomorrow. Similarly, Lake Catholic announced it will be a snow day on its Facebook page. Meteorologists said a winter storm was expected to hit the area Sunday night and persist through Wednesday morning, leaving as much as two feet of snow. The snow is caused by an arctic airmass that is moving into the area. Its cold air combined with the low pressure across the Great lakes will allow for the possibility of persistent lake effect snow across …

Both schools are over their allotment of calamity days and will have to make them up unless the law changes
Mentor Schools and Lake Catholic High School are closed today because of concerns about snow, wind and messy roads. The National Weather Service has warned the region that a winter storm could drop between 6 to 10 inches of snow by 4 p.m. today. Then winds between 15 and 25 mph could make things even messier this afternoon. This is the fifth snow day of the year for Mentor Schools and Lake Catholic. A recent state law change made it so districts only have three calamity days instead of the previously allotted five. This means that the schools will have to make up at least two days unless the law changes back. State Sen. Tim Grendell has proposed legislation that would return the number of calamity days from three to five. It is possible, …

Second consecutive snow day forces schools to reschedule National Day of Signing festivities
Mentor Schools and Lake Catholic High School are closed today because of concerns about icy roads. A winter storm has been rolling through the region since Monday evening. It dropped about five inches of snow Monday night, but that snow turned into sleet and freezing rain Tuesday night. The schools' administrations called for a snow day today out of safety concerns. The calamity day means both Mentor High School and Lake Catholic will have to reschedule festivities for National Signing Day. High school senior athletes from across the country are expected to sign letters of intent to the colleges where they will play today. Both high schools in Mentor had athletes slated to participate, but weather has interfered. Students will still sign, …
