Shop Local On Small Business Saturday

Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in Mentor?

Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Mentor and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third year…

Store With Style Expands Custom Concept from Garages to Entire Homes

Store with Style used to be a custom storage provider for garages. The company moved and now offers solutions throughout a customer's residence

Though clientele for their garage makeover business had been growing, the Wallaces knew additions would be needed for things to stay that way. "For us, it's all about being as diverse as we can be," Store with Style co-owner Tony Wallace said. "Also, offering to our customers exactly what they're looking for. Not something close or not something like "oh, we can kind of make this fit." Store with Style, 8250 Tyler Blvd. Suite E, used to be Garage Outfitters on Mentor Avenue. The previous business specialized in custom storage designs for garages. Now, the Wallace family has expanded that concept to a customer's entire home. The full-time additions of Tony and Kathy's sons, Aaron and Alex, allowed the business to incorporate custom …

Beyond Christmas Ale: Try Hard Ciders, Belgium and Pumpkin Beers

Local craft beer aficionados share their holiday favorites to help you expand your beer palate. And you can get them close to home.

Rozi's Wine & Liquor House Inc. 14900 Detroit Ave.  Lakewood 216-221-1119 Rozi's Manager Bill Barak gave us the rundown between the two general classifications of Christmas-time beers, Christmas or spiced and winter warmers. “Winter warmers are scotch ales or strong ales. Basically they are heavier more malty. They warm your belly. They are thick and thus take longer to get through. “Then you have your Christmas beers which are spice beers. The actual classification is spice or vegetable beers is the broad style.” In his opinion Ohio is the leader of the spice beers as far as Christmas ales go. There really aren't other areas that produce it or produce it as well as we do, he said. Winter warmer craft beer selection: Breckenridge Christmas…

Tom, I hope I didn't imply there was a decision for Patch to shift its focus away from local news -- there wasn't. There was a company-wide decision to cover the elections closely, especially with so many Presidential candidate appearances in northeast Ohio, which did generate a LOT of debate in our Comments section. But you'll find each Patch site is still dedicated to covering local news and …   more ›

Fredon Corp. Settling into New Headquarters

The building sits on 11 acres of land where nearly 90 employees make helicopter parts and more

Roger Sustar has experienced some good and bad in the short time since his Fredon Corp. staff relocated to 8990 Tyler Blvd. Shortly after beginning the transition from Enterprise Drive, his new headquarters suffered a cracked floor from trying to move in a 42,000-pound horizontal milling machine on a 50,000 pound tow motor. Just weeks after he began incorporating offices into the new building, rain seeped inside as Superstorm Sandy hit Northeast Ohio. All of that accompanied Sustar's wife declaring him "freaking nuts" for taking on — and paying for — such an expansive project. He didn't exactly disagree with her, but the entrepreneur would have it no other way. "This is unbelievable," he said. "This is a huge endeavor … we're having one …

"They're hitting a big base around this area, I'm sure it's going to be packed all the time." Before Friday, Mentor residents had to drive to Cleveland Heights, Independence or Lakewood for Melt's popular grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, fries and microbrews.
