President Obama Names Cordray Consumer Watchdog at Shaker Heights Event

President Obama spoke today at Shaker Heights High School.

Updated 5:45 p.m. Wednesday President Barack Obama visited Northeast Ohio today to announce the appointment of Richard Cordray, who will run the new consumer protection agency. Obama told a crowd at Shaker Heights High School that people need a consumer watchdog to defend and advocate for them. "For way too long, we’ve had a financial system that was stacked against ordinary Americans," Obama said. Cordray, a former Ohio attorney general, accompanied the president on the trip. “Does anybody think the reason we got in such a financial mess, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, the worst economic crisis in a generation, that the reason was because of too much oversight of the financial industry?” Obama asked. Clevelanders' Wish List for President Obama

People spoke about what they want to hear from President Barack Obama today when he speaks about the economy at Shaker Heights High School

Jessica Williams says she is lucky. The 27-year-old Cleveland resident has a job that provides health insurance. It's basic and she pays for most of it, but she knows others have struggled far more in this economy. She wants to hear how President Barack Obama will help people who are unemployed obtain jobs when he speaks today at Shaker Heights High School. And she has other concerns. “I know people who went to college like I did, and they have mediocre jobs,” said Williams, who went to Case Western Reserve University. “Most of my paycheck goes to student loans.” Many in Cleveland’s Shaker Square shared similar stories. Was her [Chelsea's] alleged "problem" that student loans used to be too limited, but after easing them she's overloaded with debt? Not to put words in her mouth, but it sounds like she is complaining that she has to pay for school, that taxpayer-subsidized student loans aren't fulfilling her needs. Ticket Information For President Obama's Visit To Shaker Heights High Wednesday

Here's more information about his visit and how you can get tickets

President Barack Obama will visit Shaker Heights High School Wednesday and talk about the economy. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. at the high school, 15911 Aldersyde Drive, Shaker Heights. The public can enter through the North Gymnasium. Tickets are required, but the event is free and open to the public. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 6 p.m. today at the Shaker Heights City School District Administration Building, 15600 Parkland Drive. For security reasons, the White House asks that attendees not bring bags and to limit personal items. No signs or banners are allowed. All attendees will go through airport-like security.
