Their hair will be used to make wigs for children who have cancer
Some Lake Catholic Cougars shed their manes Thursday at Blondie Hair Design to help children with cancer. The hair will be donated to Locks of Love, which uses the hair to make wigs for sick children who cannot afford them. Annaliesa Stebal, Casey Kotoch and Nicole Saraniti are just the most recent students to grow out their hair so they can donate it. Even Lake Catholic Principal Robert Kumazec grew a ponytail so he could give his hair. The Lake Catholic community was spurred to action in part because of two 8-year-old girls. Sara Hudson and Erin Potter were battling T-cell lymphoma and leukemia, respectively. Sara is the daughter of Lake Catholic biology teacher Scott Hudson and Erin is related to several Lake Catholic staff and faculty …

See the big stories from in and around Mentor this week
1. Big changes are coming to the It's Better In Mentor Festival next year. How big? How about more local businesses participating? Neighborhoods competing for bragging rights in obstacle courses and tug-of wars? (Tugs-of-war?) How about no carnival rides? See a list of all the proposed changes here. 2. Police officers and firefighters from all around the region joined Lake Catholic students Tuesday morning at the high school for a prayer ceremony commemorating the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11. The students thanked the men and women of the myriad departments (as well as one canine) for their service, as well as those from across the country. Check out our video of the ceremony. 3. See what some local people our doing in the memory of Sara …

Sara Hudson, 8, passed away this summer after succumbing to T-cell lymphoma
Sara Hudson was a smiler, her father Scott Hudson said. "She was a ball of energy, full of smiles," he said. "She was a friend to everyone." When Sara and her family -- which also includes mother Kim and sister Kaley -- saw that her T-cell lymphoma wasn't getting better, the Leprechaun Society wanted to put one more smile on her face. The 8-year-old girl made a wish -- she wanted to take a limo ride with as many of her friends as possible to Little Italy in Cleveland and enjoy a meal from Mama Santas -- and the Leprechaun Foundation made that wish happen. Even though Sara succumbed to the cancer this summer, her family still remembers how happy that granted wish made her. "They did it all with a day-and-a-half notice," said Scott Hudson, …

I take my children to 2 festivals a year. St Johns because the childrens games are cheap and they always win a prize. Then we would take them to better in mentor for the rides. This is sad to me. Now i will have to find a different fair to take the kids to for rides. I never attend the lake county fair, I think there are too many drunk people walking around that one. This is a bummer and i think …   more ›
