No need to check out the skies of Mentor on Christmas Eve to see if Santa Claus is really coming to town. You can track the Jolly Old Elf the high-tech way. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is charged with keeping the United States and Canada safe from dangers originating from the sky or space. For Christmas, however, the Colorado-based government agency adds one more important task to its daily list of duties. The agency will again provide its Official Santa Tracker that marks The Big Man's every move as he makes his way throughout both hemispheres. Great Lakes Mall To Host Caring Santa Event This Sunday

The event is dedicated to families who have children with special needs

Great Lakes Mall will host a special Caring Santa session from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. this Sunday. Caring Santa is a special event dedicated to families that have children with special needs. It provides a subdued and stress-free environment to visit with Santa. Many steps are taken to reduce sensory triggers, creating a more comforting environment for the children’s visit with the jolly one. Santa's set is located in the Dillard's south concourse. Santa's regular hours are from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (with hour-long reindeer breaks at 1 and 5 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays (reindeer break at 2.) Santa Returns To Great Lakes Mall, Along With His Annual Photo Contest

Kids -- and, on special days, pets -- can get their photos taken with the jolly one; the cutest photos can win their families an all-inclusive trip to Port St. Lucie in Florida

Santa Claus has made his annual return to the Great Lakes Mall and both kids and (on some special days) and pets can get their photos taken with the jolly one. Children can be photographed with Santa at his set located in the Dillard’s south concourse from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday (with hour-long reindeer breaks at 1 and 5 p.m.) and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays (reindeer break at 2.) Hours will extend as Christmas nears. Additionally, Santa will be available from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Black Friday. The mall will also host special Pet Photo nights so families can get their beloved animals photographed with Santa, as well. VETERANS DAY EVENTS Where/When: Mentor Senior Center, 7 p.m., Nov. 11; Mentor Public Library main branch, 6 p.m. Nov. 10 Why Go: There are several events for and about veterans around Mentor this upcoming weekend. The city of Mentor is holding an observance ceremony to celebrate the courage and sacrifice of all veterans at 7 p.m. this Friday at the Mentor Senior Center. The guest speaker is Bob Zonneville, a Mentor man who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He has received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and numerous other awards. All veterans and the general public are invited to the ceremony. Also, the senior center will be hosting a special breakfast for all veterans Saturday morning. Kids celebrated Christmas in July with the help of some festive lifeguards Monday

The city of Mentor celebrated Christmas in July this Monday at Eleanor B. Garfield Park pool. Kids played games, which were led by festively dressed lifeguards. Santa also made a surprise appearance. He threw the kids candy and T-shirts from the roof of the pool house.
