Safety Officers Give Tips On How To Have A Safe New Year's Eve

Follow this advice and avoid a regrettable New Year

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9,878 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2011, including 395 during the second half of December alone. While that number is actually the lowest it has been since 2005, that is still a lot of people who did not need to die. Furthermore, in Ohio last year, eight people died in crashes involving drunken drivers between Christmas and New Year’s. Year-to-date, Ohio Highway Patrol troopers have made an additional 944 more drunken driving arrests than when compared to the same time period last year. Here are some safety tips from Mentor Fireman Nathan Peters. Enjoy them and have a safe and happy Thanksgiving: The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food. Dinner can be ruined by the “I just left for a moment to …” accident. Do you know how to put out a stove top fire that is contained in a pan? Put a lid on it, then turn off the heat, let it cool and call 911. These steps can help contain the fire to the pan until the fire department arrives.
