Firefighters packed Mentor City Hall's Council meeting room Tuesday evening. Most of them were from the Mentor Fire Department but officers from Willoughby Hills, Kirtland, Willoughby and Concord Township were there, as well. And everyone in the room -- even those who never wore turnout gear or hosed a flame -- rose to give Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey a standing ovation when he received a resolution from City Council, congratulating him for winning the Ohio VFW's Firefighter of the Year award. "I am so humbled and so honored by this award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, which are very dear to my heart," Harvey told the audience. Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey has been in fire service a long time -- perhaps longer than he cares to be reminded. And now the Ohio VFW has thanked him for his decades of service and humanitarian efforts by naming him the 2012 Ohio firefighter of the year. The award comes with a $300 donation toward the charity of Harvey's choice. He selected the Mentor Safety Village. The money will help the firefighters create an educational DVD about sudden infant death syndrome. "I was very surprised, very humbled by it," Harvey said. "I did not know that I was nominated for it. They did a good job of sneaking around behind my back," he joked. Fire Chief Richard Harvey will be training to respond to health disasters across the country
Mentor Fire Chief Richard Harvey will participate in training that will prepare him to respond to health disasters across the country. Harvey is a volunteer for the Lake County Medical Reserve Corps, a group of medical professionals that help when there is a local health crisis. For example, it helped distribute H1N1 vaccines last year. The corps include doctors, nurses, paramedics, lab technicians, veterinarians, as well as other health professionals. The local chapter is headed by the Lake County General Health District. The federal MRC has more than 900 units across the country, including one in Lake County. Each of those 900 units has several members. Harvey was one of 60 volunteers selected from all the units across the country to …
