Inspection Reports: Which Food Providers Had Fewest Violations in April?

Stores and schools are featured in this month's roundup of inspections

It's not uncommon for multiple food providers in Mentor to receive spotless reports in a month, but April's round of inspections featured visits to schools throughout the city. The results bordered on perfect, which Lake County General Health District Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus said is also not uncommon. "By and large, they're wonderful, as they should be, because they feed a lot of kids," Niehus said. "We give them (school administrators and staff members) training and many have attended a two-day safety course. "Schools are always proactive about wanting employees to be trained and up to date." The district tries to visit schools once in the spring and once in the fall. That gives inspectors a chance to make …

Chipotle to Donate Half of Tuesday's Proceeds to Mentor Farmer's Market

The restaurant will support the market by up to $5,000

A Chipotle purchase on Tuesday May 21 will mean more than boosting the profile of one of the nation's most recognized chains. Customers who buy food from Chipotle in Mentor will also be donating to the upcoming Mentor Farmer's Market, which opens on May 31. According to Chipotle, the restaurant will donate 50 percent of its Mentor proceeds to the farmer's market, up to $5,000. People can take advantage of the deal at both the Reynolds Road and Mentor Avenue locations. "Last year, I heard that Chipotle could sometimes be found at local markets because they pride themselves on buying local," Kathie Pohl, Mentor's director of community relations and marketing, said. "I reached out to them and was put in touch with their marketing outreach …

Little Mountain Brewery Coming to Mentor

The brew-your-own-beer business will open by late July or early August

A brew-your-own beer businesses primed for growth has selected Mentor as the city to house its expansion. Little Mountain Brewing Co. will move to Mentor and open by late July or early August, owner Bob Weber said. The company has been in Kirtland since 2010, but will receive an incentive grant of at least $4,000 from the city to help out with its move. Moving to 7621 Mentor Ave. will give Little Mountain a space that is six times larger than its current location, which is just 1,200 square feet. Once the transition is complete, Little Mountain will offer food for the first time. The company is teaming up with chef Chris Sotkovsky, who operates The Reserve catering company in Chardon. "We wanted to add food service when they brew on …

Potpourri Fondue to Close Following Mother's Day

The restaurant has been open for 35 years

After 35 years of operation, Potpourri Fondue Restaurant will close in less than two weeks. The restaurant will close its doors after Mother's Day dinner, according to a Plain Dealer report. The restaurant at 8885 Mentor Ave. opened on Valentine's Day in 1978. "Honestly, we couldn't hold onto to it anymore," co-owner Debbie DeBernardi told the paper. "There's so much competition and things are so expensive anymore, we just decided we'd have to do what we have to do."  The business has been up for sale, but the DeBernardi family has yet to find a buyer. "People are just so sad when we tell them," DeBernardi said. "They're concerned about how we're doing. There's been a real outpouring of affection. "We've built a lot of friendships — we've …

Future of Mentor Five Guys Is Uncertain

City's economic development director said the restaurant could be looking elsewhere

Few eateries are more anticipated in Mentor than Five Guys Burgers & Fries, but, at best, the wait will have to continue. The restaurant, famous for its big burgers, brown-bag fries and lengthy toppings list, appears no closer to opening than it was in July 2012 when a revised parking lot plan was approved for Five Guys and Hooley House. The city announced that Five Guys had plans to open a location next to Hooley at the intersection of Tyler Boulevard and Route 306 last year, but city officials aren't certain about the project's future. "They have some cost considerations relative to improvements on the site," Mentor Economic Development Director Ron Traub said. "They're working through those now." Traub added that the company might be …

Inspection Reports: Which Food Providers Had Fewest Violations in March

Here are some of the Mentor restaurants and food service providers where state inspectors found few or no violations

With so many Mentor restaurants receiving inspections in January and February, — the end of the licensing year — the Lake County General Health District will largely focus its attention elsewhere in the coming months. "We'll be there at the Mentor Chamber (Restaurant Showcase on Wednesday) because have to go out and look at all those participating places," Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus said. "In the summer, we're at fares and festivals under a canopy, carnival trailers ... we have more than 100 temporary events we inspect because there could be one to 60 (food service providers) at every event to inspect." Fewer restaurants to inspect in March also gave way to inspecting grocers, drug stores and other locations that deal …

Inspection Reports: Mentor Restaurants That Received Violations, Complaints in March

Here are some restaurants where inspectors found multiple violations, including some critical ones

The volume of inspection reports conducted by the Lake County General Health District was considerably lower in March, but that's normal. February marks the end of the food service licensing year, and there are often several restaurants who receive their necessary inspections in the final two months. March usually begins a lighter load for the district, which conducts reports on area restaurants in compliance with the Ohio Department of Health and the state's revised code. "In March, we reorganize and work on projects and other things that had been set aside," county district Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus said. So while there were fewer overall reports than the previous month's batch, there were still flawless reports and …

Frank and Pauly's Restaurant Closes Doors

Restaurant's owner announces retirement via Facebook

After just a year in business, Frank and Pauly's Italian American Restaurant is leaving Mentor. "Frank and Pauly's has now closed its doors," owner Dennis Koury wrote on the restaurant's Facebook page on Friday. "I am going back to retirement. Thank you all for your support & loyalty." The restaurant opened for dinner on Feb. 1, 2012 to a community that was excited to see a new business in the Sawyer Home at 9470 Mentor Ave. The Lake County landmark on the National Register of Historic places had been empty since Mark Fuerst closed his restaurants in 2008. The Mentor restaurant was a continuation of the original Frank and Pauly's, which opened in 1993 in the BP Building in downtown Cleveland. That restaurant closed 13 years later after the…

Inspection Reports: Which Mentor Restaurants Had Multiple Violations?

Here are some restaurants where inspectors found multiple violations, including some critical ones

While reviewing food service inspection reports from last month, Lake County General Health District Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus warned that multiple violations don't always equal a bad dining experience. The district, in compliance with codes from the Ohio Department of Health, seemingly puts more weight on whether those violations are critical and if they are corrected in a timely manner. Niehus' Giant Eagle example showed a three-violation report on the Mentor-on-the-Lake store, but employees fixed those issues on the spot. Officials view that kind of a response in a positive light, while multiple visits with no progression can prompt inspectors to recommend business owners to take compliance classes. Here are some of …

Inspection Reports: Which Mentor Restaurants Had Fewest Violations?

Here are some of the Mentor restaurants where state inspectors found few or no violations

Editor's note: This story was updated on March 20. Each month, the Lake County Health District conducts inspection reports on area restaurants in compliance with the Ohio Department of Health and the state's revised code. Based on their size and risk, most restaurants are inspected at least twice a year. Some inspectors determine that an eatery's violations require follow-up visits, county district Director of Environmental Health Nancy Niehus said. There are more than 40 possible violations a food service business can receive. Niehus stressed that the majority of restaurants in Mentor and the county perform well on inspection day. A look through reports at the district's Painesville office shows that few Mentor restaurants received more …
