The Mentor High boys basketball team is one win away from its sixth straight district title
Last week, Mentor High boys basketball Coach Bob Krizancic told his team that they needed to play better defense. His players took the message to heart. They clamped down on South and rolled past the Rebels, 84-44 in the Division I district semifinal Thursday. “You could see the energy we played with tonight on defense, and that was great to see,” Krizancic told Ohio Varsity. “It was a complete effort for us on both ends. We played a lot of guys and had a lot of guys step up and play really well. But the time to enjoy this doesn’t last long. We have a game to play on Saturday and we know it is going to be a challenge.” South -- who had been playing well of late and toppled PAC foes Riverside and Madison to make the district semis -- were …

Cardinals face Wildcats for place in Division I state semifinals
Mentor’s explosive passing offense has been the talk of Northeast Ohio football this season with junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky squarely at its center. The Cardinals have garnered national rankings, been ranked No. 1 in the state and first in the Plain Dealer’s Top 25 poll for good stretches of the season. But if that high-powered offense has shown one clear weakness in its lofty scoring numbers, it’s been the interceptions at inopportune times. Mentor (11-1) faces St. Ignatius (10-2) in the Division I, Region 1 final beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lakewood Stadium with many of these concerns at the forefront. Trubisky powered the Cardinals’ Week 3 victory over the Wildcats, 38-24, at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium but threw four picks …

Win sets up rematch with St. Ignatius in Regional Final
The rematch is over. St. Ignatius is up ahead. And Mentor can put Saturday’s near disaster against Solon behind them. The top-seeded Cardinals almost squandered a four-touchdown lead but held on late to knock off the fifth-seeded Comets, 42-40, in a wild Division I, Region 1 semifinal matchup at Byers Field in Parma. Mentor improved to 11-1 on the season and will play another regular season foe in second-seeded St. Ignatius next Saturday in the regional final. The game’s site will be announced Sunday. The Cardinals defeated the Wildcats at home, 38-24, on Sept. 9. Solon’s season ends at 10-2. Despite committing five interceptions and losing two fumbles, the Cardinals defense held the Comets late to seal the win. Mentor kicker Tomislav …

Besser's passing overcomes Cougars' secondary, ends state title dreams
St. Vincent-St. Mary head football coach Dan Boarman looked at the 22 interceptions Lake Catholic’s defense piled up this season and liked his team’s chances through the air. With that knowledge, most teams would keep the ball on the ground, but not Boarman. Not when he’s got Kevin Besser directing his offense. “Our kid is an accurate thrower. He only had five interceptions up until today,” Boarman said. “I liked our numbers better than theirs.” SVSM senior quarterback Kevin Besser lived up to his coach’s expectations and carved up the Cougars’ secondary with a pair of touchdown passes to Jordan Hargrove as the sixth-seeded Irish (10-2) upset second-seeded Lake Catholic (10-2), 31-14, in the Division III, Region 9 semifinals Friday night. …

Cardinals don't plan to change their offensive style for Solon in rematch
Win or lose, the past is always with us. The Mentor and Solon football teams will face off Saturday night for the right to play in the coveted Division I, Region 1 final next weekend, but their Oct. 6 regular-season meeting will loom large over this weekend’s matchup. The Cardinals (10-1) won that Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division contest, 44-20, and proved that Mentor head coach football Steve Trivisonno’s five-receiver passing attack could handle a mighty defense on the road. For the Comets (10-1), it marked the end of their 20-game regular season home-winning streak and left them hoping that if the opportunity presented itself again, the proper adjustments would gain them greater glory. The Comets, ranked 10th in the Associated …
