Shooting Range Legislation, Cleveland Clinic & Audi on Planning Commission's Agenda

Lake National Bank and Melt also have items up for consideration

The Mentor Planning Commission has a lengthy agenda waiting for it when its members meet 7 p.m. today at City Hall. Moreover, that agenda has some high-profile businesses on it. For example, the Cleveland Clinic has requested that 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street be rezoned from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons, said Ron Traub, the city of Mentor's director of business and economic development. It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad. The Clinic has been coy about its intentions for the property. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to …

Mentor City Council Starts Process To Allow Shooting Range In City

If amendment to city code is passed by Planning Commission and City Council, then professional shooting ranges would be allowed in Mentor's industrial districts

Mentor City Council began the first step in allowing a professional indoor shooting range in the city. They passed a pair of resolutions during their most recent meeting that initiated the process. One resolution recommended a change to the city code that would allow people to fire a gun in the city -- but only in a commercial indoor shooting range. The second resolution suggested that such ranges be allowed in the city's industrial zones. Council passed both resolutions unanimously. The next step will be for Mentor Planning Commission to propose these amendments to the city code, as well. Finally, Council would need to pass the Commission's amendments that they initially recommended. The issue initially came up when a business owner asked…

Planning Commission Approves Permit, Site Plan For Audi Dealership

Some neighbors of the development site expressed concerns about the dealership

The Mentor Planning Commission approved both the permit and preliminary site plan for a proposed Audi dealership on Market Street during its meeting Thursday night. As previously reported, Penske is looking to relocate its Willoughby Audi dealership to 8599 Market St., which will bring about 50 jobs to the city and generate about $30 million in sales. The proposed dealership would be 23,000 square feet and built on a vacant six acres just north of Outback Steakhouse. The property borders residential neighborhoods on the lot's north and west sides, so the Penske has said it will build a 25-foot landscape buffer on those borders. However, some Mentor residents came to the meeting and said they were concerned about potential light, noise and…

Planning Commission Approves Of Road Vacation

Residents say vacating road is best way to deter trespassing, vandalism

Mentor Planning Commission unanimously voted to support the vacating of the Lake Overlook Drive extension after residents said it would help stop trespassing and vandalism in that area. Most of the people who live along the extension, led by John Habe, attended the Commission meeting Thursday night at City Hall. Habe said the neighborhood has been victimized by people who cut through their yards and party on their private beach property. "The street itself is a magnet for break-ins, vandalism, trespassing, alcohol, drugs, drug deals and debris," Habe told the Planning Commission. "Fifteen police reports have been filed concerning the most malicious of these incidents." Habe said if the city vacated the road, it would deter trespassers. "…
