Some commission members raised concerns over collector's accountability and the poorly graded charity for which they collect
In a 4-3 vote, the Mentor Planning Commission voted against allowing Blue Water Bin Management to have two collection bins at 6994 Heisley Road during its meeting Thursday night. The Commission members who voted against the bins -- Sean Blake, Katherine Cimperman, Bruce Gamiere and Thomas Huth -- expressed concerns about Blue Water's accountability and the poorly graded charity to which it donates some of its money. Blue Water representative Dominic Deluca told the Commission that the company donated money to the Childhood Disease Research Foundation. "We are an arm (of CDRF) and we fundraise for them," he said initially. When Blake asked Deluca if Blue Water was a 501(c)3 charity, Deluca said it was not. "We're contracted to fundraise for…

The Oriental Martial Arts Academy is located at 7468 Tyler Boulevard
The Mentor Planning Commission can vote on a permit for a new martial arts facility at 7468 Tyler Boulevard during its meeting Thursday evening at City Hall. The Oriental Martial Arts Academy is open and operates in the same complex -- but in a different unit -- as Miss Kimberly Day Care and Cross Fit 440. The academy is run by Sihyeok Lee and it offers classes for teens and adults on weekday evenings. The classes provide cardio exercise while teaching self-defense, meditation and ki (breathing) techniques. A permit is required because this is a new use for the existing space. Also at the Planning Commission meeting: The permit for the proposed Speedway service station on Heisley Road is also on the agenda. The proposal was tabled at the …

Commission also approves design re-imaging for Classic Hyundai dealership at Thursday's meeting
Mentor Planning Commission voted to table a request for a permit to run a Speedway service station at 5700 Heisley Road during its meeting Thursday. The property is currently the home of Sohl's Service Center. Mentor Planning Administrator Ric Spence and the Planning Commission were concerned about traffic near the Heisley-Diamond Center intersection. Consequently, Spence suggested that -- should the permit for the service station be approved -- that drivers not be permitted to turn left into or out of its driveway. However, Greg Schunck of Richard Bowen & Associates -- the business that applied for the permit -- said a no-left-turn rule would make it very difficult for business. As a compromise, it was suggested that Schunck contact Avery…

When David Bradt of Richard R. Bowen & Associates applied to build a Speedway service station on Mentor Avenue -- it would have replaced the former Kronheim's Furniture building -- the Planning Commission voted 6-1 against giving Bradt a conditional use permit, which essentially nixed the project. At the time, the Commission voiced concerns that the lot was not big enough for a Speedway service station and convenience store. Undeterred, Bradt has suggested another location for a Speedway in Mentor -- 5700 Heisley Road, the former home of Sohl's Service Center. The Planning Commission will have a chance to vote on a permit and preliminary site plan for the proposed Speedway during their meeting 7 p.m. today at City Hall. According to the …

Mentor Planning Commission unanimously approved permits for both a Burger FI restaurant at 8748 Mentor Ave. and an indoor shooting range at 6240 Tin Man Road during its meeting Thursday evening. The commission also approved the restaurant's and range's respective preliminary site plans. David Holtz, the owner of the forthcoming North Coast Gun Club, noted that it had been a long path to get the necessary permissions to open a shooting range. First, the City Council needed to approve changes in the city code to allow the business to operate. Then the Commission had to issue a conditional-use permit. Before the Commission voted for the shooting range's permit, a neighboring business owner expressed some concerns about it. Jim Lawyer said he …

The business is now eying a location on Tin Man Road
Though the Mentor Planning Commission did not vote on the proposed shooting range during its meeting last night, the business idea is far from dead. The Mentor Planning Commission was initially slated to have a public hearing and review a preliminary site plan with the North Coast Gun Club for a proposed shooting range on Justin Way. However, the property owner -- who is not the gun club -- is now in talks with a different business for use of that property, said Ric Spence, Mentor's planning administrator. However, the shooting range is now eying a location on Tin Man Road, according to Angel Alvarez, an architect on the project. Alvarez said the North Coast Gun Club tends to file a proposal with the city today. Also at the Planning …

Mentor has been gradually moving toward bringing a shooting range to the city. The Mentor Council even adjusted the city's legislation to make it possible. However, the plans for the shooting range have taken back or, at least, a step to the side. The Mentor Planning Commission was initially slated to have a public hearing and review a preliminary site plan during its meeting tonight from the North Coast Gun Club for a proposed shooting range on Justin Way. However, the property owner -- who is not the gun club -- is now in talks with a different business for use of that property, said Ric Spence, Mentor's planning administrator. This does not mean the North Coast Gun Club couldn't negotiate with another property owner in Mentor to open up…

Mentor Planning Commission voted against a conditional-use permit that would allow for a new Speedway gas station at 7590 Mentor Avenue, which would have replaced the former Kronheim's Furniture building. Commission members voted against it 5-1 with some members saying the gas station was not in character with the adjacent residential area. Additionally, the city's ordinances dictate that the Speedway's convenience store should have a 50-foot buffer around. However, due to the size of the lot, the farthest the building could be from the property line is 42 feet, The News-Herald reported. Planning Commission Chairman Bill Snow suggested that the lot was simply too small to accommodate the proposed service station and convenience store. …

The Mentor Planning Commission had a lengthy agenda with some high-profile businesses on it Thursday night, including the Cleveland Clinic, Penske Automotive Group, Melt and Great Lakes Mall. The Commission unanimously approved Cleveland Clinic's request to rezone 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons. It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad. Cleveland Clinic has been coy about its intentions regarding the property and continued to be so at the meeting. When Commission Member Katherine Cimperman asked Brian Smith, the director of …

Sounds a bit like George Castanzas "The Human Fund". I get the idea on the voting commity saying it is only the city's place to follow zoning rules but shouldn't they also consider not giving space to what appear to be fraudulent charities? This is OUR city and us tax payers should not be part of a possible crime by having this company on OUR property. I agree with the no vote.   more ›
