The life-sized board game comes back to Penitentiary Glen
The 12 Days of Winter has returned to Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland; and you know its tune, even if the words are a little different. "On the first Day of Winter, the season gave to me, the snow falling on a pine tree... Learn the 12 gifts that nature gives us in winter -- including hares a-hopping and snowflakes dancing -- while playing a life-sized board game at the park. If you like board games, you can also check out Penitentiary Glen's exhibit featuring classic games from the 1950s through 1970s. There will also be crafts, activities, a scavenger hunt and snowshoe rental. Just today (Dec. 1,) there will be face painting from 1 to 3 p.m.

The butterflies have been raising their young and feeding in the gardens at Penitentiary Glen all summer long; now it's time for them to fly
All summer, the Monarch butterflies in the gardens at Penitentiary Glen have been growing and getting stronger. And now is your best chance to see them before they fly south for the winter. To commemorate the butterflies' incredible migration to Mexico, Lake Metroparks is hosting the Monarch Open House from noon to 4 p.m. this Sunday at Penitentiary Glen. The free event is dedicated to learning all about Monarch butterflies and discovering amazing facts about their life cycle and annual sojourn. Kids can come and learn about Monarchs, count the butterflies in the garden, make a craft, learn how to attract butterflies to their own backyard and maybe win a Monarch-related prize. There's still time to register for Lake Metroparks' celebration of the glowing, shiny and phosphorescent
Nature was throwing rave parties with all sorts of glow-in-the-dark and phosphorescent creatures before humans caught. Lake Metroparks is hosting a celebration of all things glowing and shiny from 8 p.m. to midnight today at Penitentiary Glen Reservation in Kirtland. Dubbed Glow-A-Palooza, families and children of all ages can participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor adventures in a carnival-type atmosphere, including: Advanced-registration is required to attend Glow-a-Palooza. Adults and children ages two and older cost $4 and children younger than 2 are free. Register online or call the Registration Department at 440-358-7275 or 800-669-9226. Kids learn about fishing, as well as how to make good decisions, at Penitentiary Glen
Kids from the "Hooked on Fishing -- Not on Drugs" day camp dropped their lines this Thursday at Lake Metroparks. Even though many of the kids had never fished before, several of them caught the bluegill and bass in Penitentiary Glen's pons. More importantly, they had fun doing it. The Hooked on Fishing program was developed more 20 years ago by the Future Fisherman Foundation. The national program uses angling skill development as a gateway to teach youth about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and how to deal with the challenges facing them in their young lives. Both Lake Metroparks parks will host special events that families can enjoy while learning about the earth
Both Penitentiary Glen and Lake Metroparks Farmpark are hosting special Earth Day events this Sunday. Penitentiary Glen Reservation, at 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland, is hosting a free eco-fair where families can learn more about conservation and the environment. Scheduled activities include: Admission and all activities are free at Penitentiary Glen Reservation. Meanwhile -- at the Farmpark, 8800 Euclid Chardon Road in Kirtland -- kids can find out how to start their own garden compost, learn how alternative energy works and investigate new ways to conserve energy at home. Parents who need something to do with their kids on Martin Luther King Jr. Day have a trio of options from Lake Metroparks and the National Park Service. Kids can learn about life on the farm during Farmpark's Discovery Day, including cow milking, roping, making ice cream and stone soup, meeting newborn calves, piglets and sheep, and more. Children can also snowshoe, if weather permits, and decorate cookies. Discovery Days at Lake Metroparks Farmpark are free for kids who are 11 and younger. Admission is $6 for everyone else, except those who are 60 and older who only pay $5. Meanwhile, at Penitentiary Glen, kids can enjoy a Fun Day Monday. Walks, kisses, dips in the pool, treats and lots of excitement for a good cause, Lake Humane Society
Lake Humane Society had a great turnout at its annual Mutt Strut Saturday at Penitentiary Glen. Canines and their owners raised money for the local animal shelter and had a good time doing it. The weather was clear and cool, although some found a dip in the drinking pool just the thing to do.

The show kicks off with live art demonstrations from featured artists from noon to 4 p.m. today
Artists have been depicting nature since cave drawings. However, there's something special about using watercolors to recreate nature in a painting, Mentor artist Alice Ronke said. "It's a wonderful medium for capturing light," she said. "You can get a luminosity with watercolors that you can't get with any other medium." Ronke is one of many local painters whose work will be featured at the art show, "The Nature of Watercolors," from today until Oct. 9 at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland.
