Enrollment is starting soon for many summer camps. Here's a selection of summer camps offered in Mentor
The city of Mentor Recreation Department offers more than 100 different summer camps on topics as diverse as fencing, application programming and theater. You can read about them all here. Any of them can be registered for online. Here are some details on some of the more unique ones. Did the Patch camera spot you and your little princess at the dance?
Daddies, granddaddies and daughters packed the Mentor Senior Center Friday night for the 12th annual Little Princess Valentine Dance. Fathers and their favorite gals could enjoy games, refreshments and, of course, dance. More than 200 people attended the special evening. I saw a lot of the dads and granddads out there with cameras, so feel free to add your own photos to the gallery.

People can learn more about the entertainment available and how to get involved with Mentor's inaugural CityFest on the site
The city of Mentor has launched a web site promoting CityFest. The new festival will be Aug. 23 and 24 near the Mentor City Hall complex. CityFest is intended as both a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mentor's incorporation as a city and as an update and upgrade on the classic It's Better In Mentor Festival. The web site offers several previews of the new festival, including links to video of the Cincinnati Circus who will have a flying trapeze show, stilt walkers, jugglers, fire-hoops, acrobats and more at CityFest. The site also has information about and video links for the band's headlining CityFest Friday and Saturday night -- Disco Inferno and Brit Beat, respectively. The annual Lake County Chili Open is one of the rare outdoor events that becomes more popular when it snows. So make sure you get your tickets now before it sells out. More than 200 golfers come out each year to play winter golf at Black Brook Golf Course. They swing through a course of nine snowy holes -- driving over snowdrifts and putting on frozen greens -- that range from 65 to 100 yards in length. They play with neon orange balls. Fathers, uncles and grandfathers still have time to register for a special evening with their little princess
The city of Mentor will host its tenth annual Little Princess Valentine's Dance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Mentor Senior Center. It is a special evening for special gals and the fathers, grandfathers and uncles that love them. However, guardians need to register for the dance soon or they won't have a ball for their belle. The dance always sells out and parents who wait too long to register may find themselves out of luck. As of Tuesday, more than 140 tickets had been sold and only about 60 remained. Additionally, tickets will not be available at the door. Each guest will receive a gift. They can also dance to music provided by a DJ, play games, win prizes and enjoy refreshments. Join the celebration with hockey and figure skating demonstrations, games, prizes and more
Everything is cooler on ice. That means for the last 30 years, the Civic Ice Arena has made the city of Mentor cooler. The Ice Arena will celebrate its 30th anniversary from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 12. There will be games, prizes and demonstrations from local youth hockey teams and figure skaters. The schedule for the day is: From 9 to 11 a.m., there will be a pancake breakfast. The donations from the breakfast go to the Special Skaters program, which teaches skating in a fun way to youths and adults with disabilities. Next, professional coaches will be offering free lessons from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Then, the west rink will have open skating from noon to 5 p.m. Meanwhile, there will be hockey clinics for children from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. …

The city of Mentor wanted something classic and timeless as their headlining performer during the new Mentor CityFest. And, also, it had to fit within their budget. "Finding the entertainment has been the biggest piece of the puzzle," said Jill Korsok, of the Mentor Parks and Recreation Department. "It took quite awhile to find what we were looing for that would appeal to everybody and fit our budget." And what did they decide on that was both timeless and affordable? The music of the Beatles. A Chicago-based Beatles tribute band, BritBeat, will perform a concert at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on Aug. 24 -- the second and final night of the festival. Wildwood Cultural Center is hosting its 33rd holiday display and craft show Sunday
You hear those footsteps? That's the sound of the holidays approaching quickly. If you're still looking for some creative gift choices, come to the 33rd annual Holiday Display and Craft Show this Sunday at Wildwood Cultural Center. More than 25 local artists and crafters will sell unique holiday gifts, including wreaths, ornaments, jewelry, baked goods and wood crafts. Additionally, Wildwood Garden Club will sell a live greenery, floral arrangements and centerpieces. The Wildwood Singers will also perform holiday music at 2 p.m. Guests can also tour the park's grounds and its beautiful Tudor manor home. The craft show costs $1 to enter.

People have until Dec. 3 to vote on the gingerbread houses, which are on display at Mentor City Hall
People have until Dec. 3 to vote on the city of Mentor's first ever Family Gingerbread House contest. The entries -- which, by the way, look delicious -- will be on display until Dec. 28 at Mentor City Hall. The winning family will get a family pool pass for 2013 aquatic season. The second and third place families will get $25 swim and save passes.
