Eight-year-old Ryan Davis has needed seven brain surgeries in the past three months
Since November, 8-year-old Ryan Davis has had seven brain surgeries. The Mentor boy been diagnosed with an arteriovenous malformation -- a tangle of arteries and veins that can cause a stroke or embolism if unnoticed -- had two shunts put into his head and contracted meningitis twice. Despite all of this, his mother Shannon Davis considers him and their family fortunate. After all, they could have not noticed the AVM and it might have killed Ryan. "We're actually lucky that Ryan showed symptoms," she said. Those symptoms began in the fall when Ryan had a pair of episodes with severe headaches and vomiting. The newsletters contain information on school events, fundraisers, PTA and more
All of the middle and elementary schools in the Mentor Public Schools district have released their free newsletters online. The newsletters contain information on each schools' parent-teacher conference schedule, local PTA, upcoming fundraisers, spelling bee winners, as well as a calendar of events. The winter newsletters also explain how to tell if your child has the cold or flu and what to do in either instance. Additionally, depending on the school, the newsletters may have information on kindergarten registration, local reading programs, Internet safety tips or even a free student ticket to a Mentor High boys basketball game. More than 400 Mentor students participated in International Walk To School Day last week
More than 400 students from Orchard Hollow and Sterling Morton participated in International Walk to School Day Thursday and Friday, respectively. They were joined by their teachers, parents, school administrators, police and firemen during their commute. Walk to School Day began in the United Kingdom and crossed the pond in 1997. Mentor's Recreation Department has organized walks for the last three years. The event encourages healthy habits and safe, walkable neighborhoods. More than 200 Mentor students participated in International Walk To School Day this morning
More than 200 Orchard Hollow students walked from Pinegate Pool to school this morning as part of International Walk to School Day. Because the Orchard Hollow mascot is a husky, many of the students clutched stuffed dogs during their walk. A few even had real dogs accompany them. Principal Karen Trunk said the school has also included the event in its PAWS Against Bullying program. Orchard Hollow and Sterling Morton students and their parents can join staffers from the Mentor Recreation Department for a walk to school
The city of Mentor is once again participating in International Walk to School Day, an event that supports healthy habits and safe, walkable neighborhoods. Orchard Hollow students and their parents can meet at 8:15 a.m. Oct. 6 by Pinegate Pool to walk to school. Sterling Morton students and parents can do the same at 8:45 a.m. Oct. 7 by the Mentor Library Headlands branch. Parents of students who wish to participate are asked to RSVP with Maggie Kuyasa of the Mentor Recreation Department. They can call her at 440-974-5720 or email at kuyasa@cityofmentor.com.
