Obama Mentions Mentor in Acceptance Speech

During his speech in Chicago, Obama discussed a family he met while campaigning in Mentor

Just days after he campaigned in Mentor, President Barack Obama gave the city a shout-out Wednesday morning in his acceptance speech. While discussing his "Obamacare" initative, Obama gave a brief account of meeting Kevin Potter, a Kirtland man he met while visiting Mentor. Potter's daughter 3-year-old daughter, Erin, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2007. When Potter introduced Obama at his Mentor High School rally, he said Obamacare saved the girl's life. Following the passage of ordinances regarding inter-fund transfers and road projects near centerpiece properties, City Manager Ken Filipiak offered reflections on a hectic week in Mentor. "With the remnants and impact of Hurricane Sandy — it certainly had an impact on Lake County and the City of Mentor — as well as the presidential visit last Satruday, it's been a very busy week in Mentor," Filipiak said. President Barack Obama Campaigns at Mentor High School

More than 4,000 supporters pack the school's gymnasium in support of the incumbent

President Barack Obama's visit to Mentor High School began with a "Go Cardinals" and ended with a request for the audience to hit the polls on election day. "Turn out on Tuesday for me," Obama said to a gymnasium full of supporters. According to Mentor Deputy Fire Chief Robert Searles, 4,010 people attended the President's rally. They packed lines around the school's gymnasium entrance well into the 11 a.m. hour. Obama took the stage shortly after noon and spoke for about 29 minutes. SAT Testing at Mentor High School Canceled Following Obama Announcement

Testing was to last from 8 a.m. to 12:45; students will be notified by SAT

SAT testing tomorrow at Mentor High School has been cancelled, Mentor Schools spokeswoman Kristen Kirby said. Kirby said representatives from SAT informed the district Friday afternoon. The testing session was to begin at 8 a.m. Sessions typically last until 12:45 p.m. The decision was made to avoid traffic and distractions from President Barack Obama's rally at the high school, which was announced Wednesday afternoon. Doors open at 9 a.m. for the campaign event. Mentor Police will close some roads around the school at some point between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., but the department has not released details. Mentor Police say roads will be open during President Barack Obama's visit, but expect slowed traffic

Editor's note: This story was updated at 11:15 a.m. Mentor Police say the roads near Mentor High School will be temporarily closed at some point between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, due to President Barack Obama's rally. "The roads surrounding Mentor High School will be closed for a period of about 10 minutes during the President’s arrival and departure," the police department posted on its Facebook page. Editor's note: This story was updated at 6:45 p.m. President Barack Obama will make a campaign stop in Mentor just three days before the election. According to a campaign statement, the president will speak at a "grassroots event" somewhere in the city on Saturday. A campaign official said more details will be available soon. The Mentor stop is part of a lengthy weekend tour. Obama will also speak at events in Dubuque, Iowa, Bristow, Va. and Milwaukee on Saturday. He will visit Concord, N.H., Ft.
