HomeGoods To Occupy Former Borders Location

The furnishings store will is expected to open some time in the summer

The former Borders bookstore in Mentor has been empty since April 2011 -- but not for much longer. HomeGoods, a home furnishings store, is moving into the 22,000-square-foot space in the Creekside Common Shopping Plaza near the border of Mentor and Painesville Township. They will be retrofitting the building and hope to open by the summer of 2013, said Mentor Economic and Community Development Director Ron Traub. "HomeGoods is a new national retailer and we're pleased that they have chosen to come to Mentor," Traub said. HomeGoods, a TJX Company, was introduced in 1992 and operates more than 300 stores across the country. It sells name-brand home décor, bedding, cookware, furniture and seasonal gifts at 20 to 60 percent off specialty and …

Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza Opens At Great Lakes Mall

Owner Michael DuBois wanted to transport his perfect pizza from Florida to Ohio

Michael DuBois found his perfect pizza in Naples. Naples, Florida, to be specific. DuBois and his girlfriend were on vacation when they went to Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza for dinner. "We had an amazing experience with the food," DuBois said. "Three days later, we came back and had another amazing experience with the food." Dubois's initial reaction to their pizza, which is cooked in the titular coal oven? "There's nothing like this in Ohio," he said. Well, thanks to DuBois, now there is. He is the owner of the first Tony Sacco's franchise in the state and it opens today at noon in the Great Lakes Mall next to the Dillard’s South building. (DuBois deliberately timed the opening to be at 12 p.m. on 12-12-12.) DuBois sees in Tony Sacco's …

Habibe Clothing Co. To Celebrate Mentor Opening This Saturday

The new fashion shop offers affordable, unique and contemporary clothing for women from all walks of life

Attar Massary Muhammed's career in fashion began with a song he recorded called "Yo Habibe." (Habibe -- pronounced ha-bee-bee -- is Arabic for "my love.") Muhammed made T-shirts to promote the song and they sold well. Always a fan of fashion, Muhammed decided that the clothing appealed to him more than the music. "It was always my dream to have a clothing shop when I got out of music," he said, adding that the two art forms have a lot in common. "They're similar in what it takes to make it -- that is, dedication and a lot of patience," he said. Muhammed started a Habibe clothing line and opened a shop three years ago in Cleveland. However, he has since decided to relocate to Mentor. "We had more customers from this part of Ohio than we did…

Mentor Student at Helm of Soon-to-Open Maracas

Ambika Bridgemohan will forgo a four-year education to help her family operate a Caribbean restaurant to open on Mentor Avenue.

The Bridgemohan family had two choices regarding 18-year-old Ambika's future. "Either she goes to college and she's in $100,000 in debt after four years, or we take that money now and open a business for her and she can learn it from the ground up," her mother Deborah said. The family decided on the latter and, on July 7, they will open Maracas, a Caribbean-flavored restaurant to be located at 7597 Mentor Ave. Instead of enrolling at a four-year university, Ambika, who will soon graduate from Mentor High School, will be the restaurant's vice president. Allowing a daughter to forgo college in favor of a startup would be tough for many families, but Ambika believes her Trinidadian roots played a role in taking the calculated risk. "We're the…

New Frozen Yogurt Shops Open In Mentor, Solon

A new chain, Frozen Oasis, has opened in the region and it has plans to expand

Tony Humbert -- the owner of the Frozen Oasis shops in Solon and Mentor -- said he first saw frozen yogurt shops while traveling a few years back. "We had looked at this a few years ago," he said. "We saw it out west." When Humbert first saw the shop -- with its self-serve flavors and toppings -- there was nothing like it in Ohio. However, in the interim, another frozen yogurt shop opened in Mentor and another is coming later this year. But Humbert thinks there is still plenty of clientele to go around for everybody. Consequently, he opened a shop two weeks ago at 8445 Market Street in Mentor, which is next door to the TNT Tanning Salon that he also owns. Then he opened a second shop last weekend in the Solon Square Shopping Center. "We …

Brown Derby to Open Diamond Centre Location

Owner won't say when, but Brown Derby will soon open in former site of Damon's Grill & Sports Bar

Residents and visitors should expect a taste of nostalgia when a new restaurant opens in Mentor. Restaurateur Parris Girves twice declined to reveal an opening date, but said he will soon open a Brown Derby location on Diamond Centre Drive. The restaurant will be housed at the former site of Damon’s Grill & Sports Bar, which closed last fall. Girves’ father, Gus, birthed the Brown Derby concept in 1941. Since then, the family chain branded many locations as Brown Derby Roadhouse. However, the Mentor eatery will open as a Girves Brown Derby, signaling a return to the white-tablecloth, modestly priced dining experience that popularized the restaurant throughout Northeast Ohio. “It’s somewhat nostalgic, in the sense that here’s something very…
