Mentor's Brandon Fritts Commits to UNC

The junior will join Mitch Trubisky next season

A standout from Mentor's junior class has already decided where he will play football in 2014. Brandon Fritts announced this week that he will play for the University of North Carolina. He'll join former Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who left for UNC in January. “Glad to say i am Officially committed to the University of North Carolina! #tarheelnation #blessed!” the junior tweeted earlier this week. “Just wanted to thank everyone who congratulated me all at once, couldn’t be more thankful for the support! It feels great to be a tar heel,” he wrote a few hours later. North Carolina recruited him as a tight end, according to UNC football blog Keeping it Heel. Fritts also received offers from Akron, Bowling Green, Minnesota, and Toledo. …

Mentor's Brandon Short Chooses Lehigh

Cardinals center and his family agreed that the Bethlehem, Pa. university was the best fit

One of Mentor's football captains will study and play at a prestigious university in Bethlehem, Pa. Brandon Short signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend Lehigh University this fall. The Mentor senior expects to play center, the same position for which he earned first-team All Northeast Ohio Conference honors during Mentor's 2012 season and deep postseason run. "It came down to the mix between academics and football, we felt that Lehigh gave us the best mix between both," Brandon said. "Being such a high academic school, their football program is also tops in the country, Division I-A, (Football Championship Subdivision)." Brandon's accolades last season included first-team all Lake County, first-team all News-Herald and second-team…

WATCH: Mitch Trubisky Wins High School Athlete of the Year Award

The recent Mentor graduate beat out another Cardinal, Justin Fritts, at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.

Mitch Trubisky has already graduated from Mentor High School and he's still winning awards. Trubisky was named the High School Athlete of the Year at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards in Cleveland Thursday night. One of the best quarterbacks Mentor has seen in a while, Trubisky beat out Kirtland High School's Damon Washington and a fellow Mentor Cardinal, Justin Fritts. Because Trubisky has already started classes at the University of North Carolina, he wasn't able to attend Thursday's ceremony. He did film a short video clip for an acceptance speech. He is Greater Cleveland's all-time career passing leader with 9,126 yards and 92 touchdowns. He also finished with 1,560 career rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Mentor was 30-8…

Mitch Trubisky Prepares To Leave Mentor For North Carolina

Mentor High School held an earlier-than-usual signing day ceremony to recognize Trubisky

Most high school athletes sign their letters of intent -- indicating what colleges they will play for -- on the first Wednesday in February. But Mitch Trubisky has never been most high school athletes. Mentor High School held an early signing day ceremony Friday morning for the reigning Mr. Football, who graduated already and leaves for the University of North Carolina Saturday. "We wanted to make sure that we took some time and honored Mitch before he heads south," Mentor High Athletic Director Jeff Cassella said. Trubisky used the signing as one more opportunity to thank Mentor Schools, his coaches and his teammates. "I made some of the best memories of my life here," Trubisky said. "Whatever you do at Mentor, you have people that …

ESPN: Mitch Trubisky Could Be Next Johnny Manziel

ESPN reporter compares Mentor quarterback favorably to Heisman winner

ESPN reporters Tom Luginbill and Michael Kim were discussing Texas A & M quarterback Johnny Manziel's Heisman win, when Kim asked Luginbill who could be the next Manziel. And who was the first name Luginbill said? Mentor Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky. (Watch video of the clip here. Luginbill first mentions Trubisky shortly after the 1:00 mark.) "He's a bigger version of Johnny Manziel -- has that sandlot feel," Luginbill said. Trubisky was recently named Mr. Football by the Associated Press of Ohio -- an honor reserved for the best high school football player in the state. He is the second Mentor quarterback in six years to notch that honor; the other being Bart Tanski in 2007. Trubisky shattered several Mentor records this year …

The meeting begins 7 p.m. at the Mentor Public Schools administration building. Zonneville was wounded twice while fighting in Europe. Mr. Football, Bridges To Nowhere & Unanswered Prayers: A Week In Review

Catch some of the biggest stories from in and around Mentor this week

1. Mentor High's Mitch Trubisky was named Mr. Football by the Associated Press of Ohio this week. That's a big deal for a lot of reasons. One, it recognizes Trubisky has the best high school football player in the state. Two, this is the second time in six years that a Mentor player has received the honor -- Bart Tanski, 2007, was the first -- and it's a short list of schools that have produced two Mr. Footballs. Three, Mentor High Schools has completed an unprecedented sweep this year. Justin Fritts, who graduated in spring, was named Mr. Basketball earlier this year. Never before this has a single school produced Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football in the same calendar year. Trubisky isn't the only local athlete that the AP honored either. 2…

Fellow Cardinals receiver Conner Krizancic and defensive lineman Kent Berger received special mentions. Krizancic caught 79 passes for 1,144 and 12 touchdowns.
