The first state championship team in the history of Mentor High boys basketball thanked their fans, city and community during a rally in their honor Sunday
The community rallied Sunday to congratulate the Mentor High boys basketball team on their state championship win. But -- instead of the team thanking the city -- the coach and team used the rally as an opportunity to thank their fans, school, city and community. "We have to thank every single on of you guys," senior forward Jeff Foreman told the crowd that filled the Mentor High gym. "You guys are phenomenal. There's not anywhere in the state of Ohio or, I think, in the country that's as supportive as you guys. This city really is a family." Likewise, Coach Bob Krizancic said the team won for "themselves, their family, this school system, their community and the entire Mentor Nation." The Mentor High boys basketball team (25-5) beat …

Saturday, March 23
This story is courtesy of Bill Tilton of Varsity Chalk Talk. Mentor didn’t look at Friday’s Division I state semifinal against unbeaten Columbus Northland as an intimidating or impossible mountain to climb to get to the ultimate goal. For the Cardinals, it was simply step 7 of 8. Playing with the confidence, poise and basketball intelligence Coach Bob Krizancic preaches to every team he has had at Mentor over the past 20 years, the Cardinals are somewhere they have never been before in program history. Mentor is at the eighth and final step of a postseason journey that started at the Euclid District in late February. The Cardinals pulled away from the No. 1 team in the AP state poll in the fourth quarter Friday, handing the Vikings its …

The Cardinals topped previously unbeaten Columbus Northland 80-69; will play Saturday evening for the state championship
The Mentor boys basketball team (24-5) topped the previously unbeaten Columbus Northland squad (28-1) to earn their spot in the Div. 1 state final. The Cardinals will play the winner of Cincinnati Walnut Hills and Toledo Rogers -- to be decided Friday night -- at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the Schottenstein Center on campus at Ohio State University. Mentor led at the end of every quarter but the close game featured almost 20 lead changes and about half as many tied scores. At the beginning of the third, the Cardinals only led 56-54 but they extended their lead to more than 11 points by the final whistle. Mentor remains unbeaten this season when they score more than 70 points. For a more complete recap of the state semi, check out our Storify …

Mentor put together an 18-0 run en route to a 60-46 win against North Canton Hoover Thursday night
When the Mentor boys basketball team have faced Shaker Heights this season, it has gone Shaker's way. Twice the Cardinals squandered 17-point leads against the Raiders. But Mentor (22-5) will get the rematch it craves when they meet Shaker Heights 7 p.m. Saturday with a spot in the Division I state final four on the line. The Cardinals are playing in their third regional final in four years. To get there, the they topped North Canton Hoover 60-46 during a regional semi Wednesday at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center. Hoover led early, scoring the game's first seven point. But Mentor replied with an 18-0 run and were never seriously threatened again. Jeff Foreman led the charge, hitting five 3-pointers in the first half and …

Good defensive and strong night by Michael Gallagher led Cardinals to 68-57 win
The cliche is that if you live by the 3, you die by the 3. In other words, if you shoot a lot from behind the arc and those shots aren't landing, then there's no way for you to win. Well, the Mentor boys basketball team beat Benedictine and that cliche Saturday night. The Cardinals depended on their second straight night of strong defense and another team-leading performance by Michael Gallagher to overcome making only 9 of 36 3s. Mentor (12-2) forced 17 turnovers en route to the 68-57 win. That means, in the two consecutive wins against Brunswick and Benedictine this weekend, the Cardinals forced 47 turnovers. On the other hand, Mentor only converted 21 of 74 from beyond the arc for a 28 percent rate during the same time span. “We talk …

Despite a slow fourth quarter, the Cardinals held onto a 69-63 win and moved into a tie for first place in the NOC Valley
The Mentor Cardinals beat Brunswick 69-63 Friday night, climbed to 11-2 and earned a tie for first place in the NOC Valley Division. That's the good news. The salt in that sugar is the Cardinals struggled to score in the fourth quarter -- a problem they have had before. Thye only scored nine points in the final eight minutes, which allowed Brunswick to winnow Mentor's 13-point lead at the beginning of the final quarter to five with less than 20 seconds to play. But, ultimately, Michael Gallagher's career-high 22 points and a defensive effort that helped force 30 Blue Devils turnovers made the difference Friday night. Caleb Potter also scored 19, including an important layup late in the game. “I know this team is talented, but right now, we…

Mentor coach, players not completely satisfied despite winning by 24 points
The only people not satisfied with the Mentor boys basketball team's 91-67 win over Willoughby South were the Mentor players and coaches. "We need to get our chemistry down and get out in transition a little more," Caleb Potter told Ohio Varsity after scoring 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half. Mentor Coach Bob Krizancic was also less than sold on his 4-0 team's performance. "It hasn’t looked good for us the past two games, but we hope it will get better," Krizancic said. Krizancic was referring to Friday's win and an 87-66 victory against Medina. The Cardinals have won their first four games by a total margin of 126 points but Krizancic wants to see continued improvement. "We are still trying to find roles and responsibilities …
