Eight students announce where they will study and play sports this fall
More than anything, each Mentor student-athlete signing ceremony reminds athletic director Jeff Cassella of the diverse talent pool at Mentor High School. The district hosted another of its periodic signing ceremonies Tuesday morning, allowing eight standouts to announce where they have decided to attend college. "You have golfers, lacrosse players, basketball players," Cassella said. "It just shows you, across the board, where our students and athletes are. That's what's amazing to me." Here's a quick breakdown of the students who announced their intentions on Tuesday, courtesy of the district: Jeff Foreman - Ashland University Lacey Miller - Mercyhurst North East Joan Graziano - Lake Erie College Paige Victor - Walsh University Natalie …

Whether you're a student going to class or a citizen visiting a grocer, the city hopes you'll wear Cardinal red tomorrow
If you have a Mentor Cardinals t-shirt, a red polo or any other red garment, there won't be a better time to break it out than Friday, April 19. Mentor City Council has declared Friday Cardinal Pride Day. The announcement was made earlier this week when council formally recognized the boys basketball team for bringing home a Division I state championship after defeating Toledo Rogers in March. The championship represents the fourth state title in school history, accompanying 1994 boys soccer, 1985 boys cross country and 1933 boys track. Read a draft of the city's proclamation for Cardinal Pride Day by clicking 'PDFs' to the right. Plan on taking pics of your Cardinal Pride on Friday? The city will purchase 20 large banners recognizing the boy's basketball team
Mentor residents and visitors will soon be reminded of the 2013 boys basketball championship each time they enter city limits. City Manager Ken Filipiak said the city is in the process of ordering 20 banners recognizing the basketball team's Division I state championship. Marketing and community relations director Kathie Pohl will purchase 30-inch-by-60-inch banners from a to-be-named vendor that will let people know they are entering the home of champion Cardinals. Filipiak said the signs would be installed at entry points, in front of Mentor High School and at "key locations around town." The city manager said more permanent signs would also be developed and installed at select entry points. The art will soon be available for citizens to…

Players, cheerleaders and band members visited with students throughout the district before heading to the state semifinal
The pace hastens when 14 visits and a trip to Columbus are involved. The Mentor High School boys basketball brisked through each building of the district Thursday morning to visit cheering students before departing to the state's capital for a semifinal matchup with Columbus Northland. The morning of "hoopla," as the district referred to it, began with a pep rally at the high school, followed by the building tours. The players, cheerleaders and band members were split into two bus groups and visited the elementary and middle schools to get clapped in and out by their young, eager fans. Watch the clip above to see the team's brief visit to Lake Elementary School. Also on Mentor Patch:

The coach was less than thrilled with his team despite a record-setting night
Mentor's sectional title and record-setting 118 points scored Friday night did not impress coach Bob Krizancic too much. The team defeated Lakeside 118-98, but the manner in which the Cardinals won seemed to irk the coach. The team entered the game preaching the importance of defense, and nearly giving up 100 points was not what Krizancic had in mind. "Our defense stunk. That starts with me," he told Ohio Varsity. I have to do a better job of getting these guys ready to play defense. It was a very poor defensive effort. We weren’t tough. We weren’t aggressive. "We set a record for points scored, but it is meaningless. It should have an asterisk by it because of how bad we were defensively." Willoughby South is next up for the Cardinals. …

The team looks to improve defensively after a 67-point victory over Chardon
The Mentor Cardinals enjoyed a 67-point victory earlier this week, but the team knows improvements are needed to get to Columbus in a few weeks. "We have a lot of deficiencies," coach Bob Krizancic said during practice Thursday. "We hadn't been shooting well (before the 114-47 victory over Chardon), and free-throws in the fourth quarter weren't good. "So, we're just trying to improve every game, and when you get in the tournament you want to be healthy and confident." No. 1 seed Mentor plays No. 11 Lakeside at 7 p.m. in Euclid for the sectional title. If Mentor wins, the team would play the victor between the Willoughby South-Madison game. While Krizancic believes Lakeside is better than Chardon, he expects previous experiences to carry …

The Cardinals scored a season-high 114 points
The Mentor boys basketball team began postseason play with a 114-point statement Tuesday night. The No. 1 seed Cardinals beat Chardon 114-47 in a game that that Hilltoppers never led besides a 3-0 advantage in the opening minutes. The team hit 16 three pointers and led by 53 entering the fourth quarter. “I liked the effort, I liked the transition game and I thought our defense was good,” Mentor coach Bob Krizancic told Ohio Varsity. “It was nice to get all the young kids out on the floor in the fourth quarter. That’s why we don’t take the bye (in the tournament). We hope to get some experience on the big court at Euclid for some of those other guys who don’t play all the time. And we got a good 15 to 17 minutes in of solid conditioning for…

The Cardinals finished the year with a 17-5 record
Now, it's all about the district tournament for the Mentor Cardinals. The boys basketball team fell to Brunswick Friday night, 68-64, and emerged talking about the motivation the loss — and missing out on claiming a piece of the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division title — would provide for the upcoming OHSAA tournament. “This is huge motivation for us going into the tournament because we lost the conference to Shaker Heights, who we had big leads on both times we played and weren’t able to finish them off,” senior guard Jeff Foreman told OhioVarsity.com. “This is the first time in my career at Mentor that we didn’t at least get a share of the league championship, and I am sure there will be people doubting us now. So we have to use …

Because the only thing that matters is football or basketball. Nothing else. This city/school district is so full of themselves. Please make it stop already. Enough about the basketball team winning. Let's move on people. But, when you can't win one and you finally do after years of saying how good all your teams are and all the hype, I guess you have to milk it for months.   more ›
