The Mentor Sparkle Cheerleaders got a warm reception from the crowd at a recent event in Chardon. The group of special needs students showed their Cardinal spirit at the Cupid’s Cheer and Dance Challenge at Chardon High School on Sunday. The group performed near the end of the all-day event and, according to Mentor Schools, received a standing ovation from the crowd that spent much of the day watching teams try to qualify for the All-Star Cheer & Dance national competition. The Mentor Sparkles made their debut in 2011. In October, the group performed on FOX 8.

Saying Goodbye To The Littlest Sparkle

A fundraiser will be held for the Jada Cromer Memorial Fund June 25 in Mentor

Jada Marie Cromer, a 14-year-old student at Memorial Middle School, lost her battle to acute lymphoblastic leukemia in May. Before then, Cromer was part of the inaugural Mentor Sparkles squad. The Sparkles are a group of students with developmental disabilties who cheered at home football and basketball games. Family and friends will celebrate the life of the littlest Sparkle with a fundraiser June 25 at Stadium Grill. For $20, people can enjoy an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner with a cash bar. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, bake sale and Chinese auction. All the money raised will go to the Jada Cromer Memorial Fund. People can buy presale tickets or donate auction items by calling Danielle at 440-339-3041 or Kelly at 440-477-3566. …

United Way of Lake County Celebrates Successful Fundraising Campaign

The local chapter of the United Way received $105,846 more in donations this campaign year than it did last year

The United Way of Lake County mentioned a lot of important numbers at its annual meeting and awards breakfast Thursday morning at LaMalfa Centre. There was But the most important number mentioned during the breakfast was two-thirds. That's how many Lake County residents use a service that receives funding from the local chapter of the United Way. Greg Lieb, the incoming UWLC Board Chair for this year, said that more than 140,000 people benefitted from UWLC funding. "That's two out of every three of us," he said. Outgoing UWLC Board Chair Steven Roszczyk said that number will likely continue to increase so the support must grow with it. "While we can certainly be proud of what we've accomplished, the truth is our neighbors' needs continue …

Mentor BOE Recognizes Project Mosaic Winners

The Board of Education and City of Mentor also recognized Teacher Marion Lipinski who helped design the curriculum for the city's Safety Village

The Mentor Schools Board of Education recognized the students who won awards from the Project Mosaic Institute, which celebrates diversity and acceptance. Three schools in the district competed in the institute's art or essay contest. Orchard Hollow and Brentmoor Elementary competed in the art contest. The students of Shore Middle School wrote essays about who they feel makes the schools a better place. Mentor School Board Appoints Two To Library Board, Puts Library Levy On Ballot

Mentor Schools also recognized the Mentor Sparkles during its Board of Education meeting Tuesday night

The Mentor Schools Board of Education appointed two new members to the Mentor Public Library Board of Trustees during its meeting Tuesday night at the CARES facility. Kurt Helfrich will replace Harry Fishleigh III, who resigned from the Board after he pleaded guilty to embezzling in federal court. His term started Tuesday and will end Dec. 13, 2017. Diane Wantz was also appointed to the Library Board. However, her term does not begin until Jan 1 and lasts until Dec. 31, 2018. She will replace Deborah Foley. Finally, the School Board voted for current Library Trustee Lowell Davis to have two more years on the board. The Board also approved putting the library's 2-mill levy on the March ballot. Video: Mentor Sparkles Cheerleading Squad Prepares for Its Debut Tonight

The Mentor Sparkes, a cheerleading squad made up of students who have special needs, will get a chance to show their stuff at the homecoming game tonight

A new squad will join the Mentor High cheerleaders tonight at the homecoming game. The Mentor Sparkles are a cheerleading squad of students with special needs. They have been practicing with the other cheerleaders to get ready for their big debut. Cheerleading coach Heather Ambrus had the idea for the Sparkles, but it is cheerleader Rachael Stevens who has spearheaded their practices. Mary Ann Kasten, grandmother of Sparkle Jimmy Dahlhausen, said the group has helped her grandson focus and express himself. "He's so into it. It really gives him a chance to sparkle, so the name is appropriate," Kasten said. After homecoming, the Sparkles will continue to cheer at home football and basketball games, Stevens said.
