The Senior Center enhances Mentor’s 50th Anniversary Celebration with spectacular live entertainment highlighting the music and comedy of the 1960’s. “You can step back in time and enjoy an evening of great memories. The superb cast will perform some of the unforgettable hits and comedy acts of the era,” Frank Krupa, the show’s creator and producer, said in a media release. The Mentor Senior Center hosted an opening day event for Cleveland Indians fans in the area
Progressive Field wasn't the only place where "Tribe Time" occurred Monday. The Mentor Senior Center hosted nearly 100 guests Monday evening for an opening day showing as the Cleveland Indians faced the New York Yankees. Though the home team ended up losing 11-6, the crowd of area senior citizens was clearly ready for some baseball, constantly cheering at the large projector screen. "Oh, they're going to win it all," Mentor resident Elaine Emser said of the team's chances this year. "We've got some new blood out there." This was the second consecutive opening day event hosted by the senior center. Visitors enjoyed popcorn, Cracker Jacks and other snacks, courtesy of several sponsors rounded up by the senior center. The page will offer users event updates, news and cancellations
The new year meant a new mode of communication for one of the city's meeting places. The Mentor Senior Center rolled out a Facebook page shortly after New Year's, in hopes of highlighting senior residents and keeping their families abreast of the latest events there. People can also expect activity information and cancellations to be posted. For example, information about this week's Mardi Gras luncheon was posted, as was a link to a survey about the center's performance. With just over a month of existence, the page has fewer than 20 likes. The center hopes to boost its profile by promoting the page through its email newsletter. "Having such a place for seniors to go is an asset to Mentor," one user posted.

Daddies, granddaddies and daughters packed the Mentor Senior Center Friday night for the 12th annual Little Princess Valentine Dance. Fathers and their favorite gals could enjoy games, refreshments and, of course, dance. More than 200 people attended the special evening. I saw a lot of the dads and granddads out there with cameras, so feel free to add your own photos to the gallery.

Fathers, uncles and grandfathers still have time to register for a special evening with their little princess
The city of Mentor will host its tenth annual Little Princess Valentine's Dance from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Mentor Senior Center. It is a special evening for special gals and the fathers, grandfathers and uncles that love them. However, guardians need to register for the dance soon or they won't have a ball for their belle. The dance always sells out and parents who wait too long to register may find themselves out of luck. As of Tuesday, more than 140 tickets had been sold and only about 60 remained. Additionally, tickets will not be available at the door. Each guest will receive a gift. They can also dance to music provided by a DJ, play games, win prizes and enjoy refreshments. Learn the basics of the Internet, email and your computer for free
The Lake County Council on Aging and Tech Wise have partnered with Connect Ohio to bring the Every Citizen Online training program to adults of Lake County. Adults are able to take free basic computer classes at local senior centers and the Council on Aging office on computer, Internet and email basics. And, while the classes are at senior centers, they are open to anyone 18 and older. The free computer training provided through the Every Citizen Online program will help adults use all the Internet has to offer. If you are interested, call 440-942-7853 to register. As of Wednesday night, 2,207 FirstEnergy customers were still without power
A few families took shelter at the Mentor Senior Center Wednesday night as they waited for the return of their electricity. As of late Wednesday night, 2,207 FirstEnergy customers were without power as a result of damage from Hurricane Sandy. The staff at the Senior Center thought that high figure would produce as many as 300 visitors to the emergency shelter. However, American Red Cross volunteer Brian Kissinger said only a dozen or so came to the center for warmth and a meal. "It's very frustrating when you want it back on," Willowick resident Darold Brown said. "People that I've talked to have lost it and got it back on. Though more than 6,000 FirstEnergy customers in Mentor are still without power, one facility with electricity has opened its doors to residents in Lake County. The Mentor Senior Center, in conjunction with the Lake County Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross, are offering warmth and a hot meal to county residents who do not have electricity as a result of Hurricane Sandy damage. So far, the center has served just 15 people, but that number is expected to increase this evening, recreation coordinator Nick Standering said. The show is presented by the Wildwood Quilt Guild
The Wildwood Quilt Guild will present the Annual Quilt Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundat at the Mentor Senior Center. A $3 donation is requested at the door. You can see the display of award-winning quilts made by the members of the guild and shop for holiday gifts, as well. The quilts for sale have been made by guild members, as well as several local shops. People can also buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the quilts.
