More volunteers helped in more projects than any time in the 20-year history of the United Way of Lake County's Day of Caring

For 20 years, the United Way of Lake County has organized the Day of Caring in which volunteers help organizations and individuals with service projects throughout Lake County. And, this year, more people volunteered and they accomplished more than ever before in the event's history. Nonprofits like Broadmoor School, James A. Garfield National Historic Site and Crossroads received a hand trimming hedges, staining benches, raking yards and so much more. Some of the projects were social as opposed to hard labor. For example, the Girl Scouts hosted an ice cream social and taught a craft at Emeritus of Mentor. About 750 volunteers from 56 different organizations gave of their time to complete more than 90 1-day projects this Wednesday, United …

Philanthropists and epicures alike still have time to buy tickets to the Mentor Rotary's annual wine and beer tasting, which will be held this Saturday evening at Honda of Mentor. Five wine distributors, as well as World Wines, will provide a myriad of vintages and locally brewed beers to sample. Food for Thought will provide the catering. Guests can pair tasty appetizers like Italian meatballs, chicken fingers rumaki, fresh fruit and peppadews with their favorite adult beverages. The tasting will also feature a truffle bar with a variety of flavors – white chocolate wasabi, dark chocolate mint, dark chocolate Irish cream, rocky road, butter ganache and peanut butter pretzel. The Mentor Rotary held a Candidates and Issues Luncheon Thursday at LaMalfa Centre. The public can attend the luncheon and, if time permits, ask questions of the candidates
The Rotary Club of Mentor will host a Candidates & Issues Luncheon at noon Thursday at LaMalfa Centre. The luncheon is open to the public, not just members of the rotary. Candidates from all four ward races will be at the luncheon -- including Ward 1 candidates Sean Blake, Becky Lynch and Nicholas Valeri, Ward 2 candidate Brian Wollet, Ward 3 candidate Bruce Landeg and Ward 4 candidate John Krueger -- as will representatives who will discuss Issue 2 and Lakeland Community College's renewal levy. Incumbents Robert Shiner, Carolyn Bucey, Ed Walsh and Ronald Micchia declined to attend. Each candidate will have two minutes to make statements.
