Dr. Seuss Fans Flock To Mentor Public Library For Birthday Celebration

Families decorated hats, fished for blue fish and, of course, read Seuss-pendous books to celebrate the good doctor's birthday

The Mentor Public Library celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with more than 200 of his young fans, Cats in Hats, Loraxes, Grinches and big-hearted moose on March 1 and 2. Dr. Seuss has proven to be a generation-spanning author. Both the children who attended the Seuss-pendous celebration and their parents were his fans. “Dr. Seuss was my mom’s favorite children’s author and it was my favorite,” said Carolyn Brazis, who attended the library event with her 5-year-old daughter Casey. “I can still recite his work.” Casey said her favorite Dr. Seuss book was “Green Eggs and Ham.” “It is about a boy who never had (green eggs and ham),” she said. “But then he tried it and he liked it. We don’t have (green eggs and ham). I think it would be …

About 50 people attended the event that featured a performance from a dance group from Cleveland

About 50 people gathered at Mentor Public Library earlier this month to watch a performance from an Irish Dance group comprised of members from The Academy in Cleveland. Girls from the Mentor Bellflower Brownie Girl Scout Troop 71186 were among those in the crowd as part of their National World Thinking Day study on Ireland. World Irish Dance Champions Byron Tuttle and Edward Searle founded The Academy in Birmingham, England in spring 2007. The Academy opened in the U.S. in 2011.

Yours Truly Hosts 'Dinner With the Presidents'

Celebrate President's Day with the James and Lucretia Garfield, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and George Washington

President's Day is not just another day (hopefully) off work in Mentor. Not in the home city of President James A. Garfield. One of the ways people can celebrate President's Day this year is by dining with Garfield, his wife Lucretia Garfield and more first couples at Yours Truly's annual Dinner With Presidents. Portrayers of President James and Mrs. Lucretia Garfield, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and President George Washington will stroll through the restaurant entertaining guests from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18. The historical re-enactors are from We Made History and several are from the Mentor area. Adults and children can play a presidential trivia game to win prizes. Seven-year-old Jacob Minich -- like millions of people around the world -- is a Winnie the Pooh fan. Lowe's At The Library Returns With Program On Installing Locking Hardwood Floors

The seminar series will tackle home-improvement subjects like lawn care, how to install a water feature, deck building, house painting and bathroom maintenance later this year

The Lowe's at the Library seminar series returns for 2013 this Wednesday at the Mentor Public Library main branch. From 6:30 to 8 p.m., representatives from the Lowe's store in Mentor will provide a hands-on demonstration on how to install a locking hardwood floor system. Locking hardwood floors don't just look good. They are easy to install and add value to a home. Learn how to install them this Wednesday at the library. The program is free -- as are all the seminars in the Lowe's series. However, people are asked to register for the program beforehand. Library Will Host Talk On How To Prevent, Prepare For 'Targeted Mass Shootings'

There were 14 mass shootings in the United States in 2012, according to the Washington Post. The targets included a coffee shop in Seattle, a movie theater in Colorado, a sikh temple in Wisconsin, an elementary school in Connecticut and -- lest we forget -- Chardon High School. More than ever, the realization has set in that something like this -- what experts call "targeted mass shootings" -- can happen anywhere. Consequently, two men with experience in campus security are hosting a special presentation on targeted campus shootings 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the main branch of the Mentor Public Library. Girl Talk Returns To Mentor Public Library With Discussion On Transformation

The special program -- for girls in fourth through eighth grade -- focused on women who have changed the world

Girl Talk -- the new quarterly program for middle schools girls at the Mentor-on-the-Lake library branch -- returned this month with a talk that focused on transformation. Specifically, the girls talked about ways in which women have transformed the world. First, the girls learned about the accomplishments of 11 special women throughout history -- including the first woman doctor, the founder of Mattel and the fastest woman in the world. After the discussion, the girls used bleach pens and stencils to “transform” blank t-shirts into personalized ones. “It’s cool to learn things I didn’t know about women I’ve never heard of before,” said Anna Platt, 8, who has attended both of the Girl Talk sessions. Girls Gather For American Girl Book Club At Mentor Public Library

Girls get excited for reading, history with new club at the library

Eight-year-old Libby Henrikson needed a tiny wheelchair to bring her doll, Julie, to the American Girl Book Club at the Mentor Public Library main branch. “She fell off a horse,” explained Henrikson of Julie’s small leg cast. “She’s been in the wheelchair since Christmas.” The Mentor Public Library is hoping to tap into just this type of imaginativity with its newest book club. More than 30 girls, from ages eight to 12, came to its first meeting earlier this month. Some had dolls but others were just eager to participate. Children’s Services Manager Kim Sidorick thought a program like this would help bring together girls with like interests to learn and just have fun. “We had an American Girl tea party here last spring that was very …
