Mentor Marsh Nature Center Extends Hours For The Season

Naturalists also lead hikes in the nature preserve from 2 to 3 p.m. every Sunday

The Nature Center at Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve has extended its hours now that winter is over. The center is open from noon to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can come in and explore the exhibits and hands-on displays, as well as discover fun facts about the region's largest coastal wetland. Additionally, naturalists lead hikes through the preserve from 2 to 3 p.m. every Sunday. The weekly Sunday Marsh programs explore seasonal occurrences and allow visitors to see sights that are hands-on and family friendly. These hikes go in mostly all weather, so please come prepared. Trails may be muddy this time of year so waterproof footwear or boots are recommended. Reservations for these weekly programs are requested. Program …

HAIR 4 HEROES BENEFIT FOR NYPD OFFICERS Where/When: Tryst Salon and Spa, 10 a.m., Sunday Why Go: On Sunday, Tryst Salon and Spa will host a fundraising event with the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association to raise money for New York Police officers in need. Hurricane Sandy left more 1,500 NYPD officers without homes, clothes, cars, and belongings. These officers remained on duty protecting citizens as their homes were ravaged by the hurricane. Tryst Salon will be offering 15 percent off all services Dec. 2 and donating all proceeds from services to the NYPD Officers. All proceeds will directly benefit Lake County families. Zombies, Birthdays & Fall Foliage: An Overstuffed Weekend Planner

1. ZOMBIE DAY Where/When: Mentor Public Library main branch, noon to 4 p.m., Saturday Why Go: Mentor Public Library will host its first ever zombie invasion, dubbed Z-Day, this weekend. Uninfected teens will gather in the library’s James R. Garfield Room to test their survival skills, including playing zombie trivia. Those who miss questions will become infected and turn into the undead. The last survivors will be awarded prizes. The undead transformations will occur through zombie makeup. (Teens are reminded to dress for undeath. Things could get messy.) The newly undead teens will zombie walk around the library’s property to terrorize the neighborhood.  Following the zombie walk the undead will return to the library for prizes, zombie …

FALL MIGRATORY BIRDING BONANZA Where/When: Mentor Marsh Nature Preserve, 2 p.m. Sunday Why Go: Mentor Marsh features upland forests, marsh grass, and open water that attracts dozens of migrating bird species including raptors, ducks, shorebirds, sparrows and warblers. Guides will discuss local and long-distance migratory patterns and species as they hike along the Marsh trails. Birders from all over the region come flocking here to birdwatch during migration--both spring and fall. Some rarities spotted recently at the Marsh include sedge wrens, Nelson's sparrows, Lincoln sparrow, and a Western kingbird. Bring binoculars or they will have some to lend. LYNN KAATZ RETIREMENT ART EXHIBITION Where/When: Gallery One Art Gallery, Friday and Saturday Why Go: Lynn Kaatz, one of Ohio’s most famous and recognized wildlife artists, is retiring and a lifetime of his original paintings will be available to collectors during a special exhibit and sale, which opens this weekend at Mentor’s Gallery One. The Lynn Kaatz collection is composed of wildlife, songbirds, landscapes, seascapes, puppies and adult dogs, sporting scenes and Americana. Many images have been replicated in plates, figurines and fine prints. NTD SUPERDRAFT - CHARITY SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT Where/When: Mentor High School, begins Friday and continues throughout the weekend Why Go: The NTD Super Draft Tournament was organized to help softball players in extreme times of need. The tournament consists of players that sign up individually and then are drafted to a team based on information supplied at registration. Teams are drafted Friday. Garfield National Historic Site, 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Why Go: The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival returns this weekend to Mentor for free performances of two of William Shakespeare's better known plays. Each year, the troupe picks one of Shakespeare's comedies and one of his dramas to stage in the park. This year, they will perform Henry VIII on June 30 and As You Like It on July 1. Both shows begin at 7 p.m. and will be performed on the same lawn where President James A. Garfiend once entertained reporters. 1. 2012 CARDINAL DASH Where/When: Mentor High School, 9 a.m. Saturday Why Go: Scott Panchik -- a health and physical education teacher at Mentor High -- is competing in the national CrossFit championship this July in Carson, CA. (He is ranked 15th among 45 finalists who were culled from more than 50,000 competitors.) To help raise money for Panchik's trip, the Mentor Redline Club is holding a competition in which people will compete in many of the same events that Panchik has mastered.
